Two new pics:

And then these caps from the alternate vlog #8 that surfaced today: h/t Heirs of Durin:

The guy smiles. He relaxes. He crosses his legs. He has hair on his shins. I like this snippet a lot!

Posted in absolute utter unadulterated joy!, acting, Armitage as mirror, Armitage as victim, Armitage's body, career, fans, fantasy, fanvids, gravitas, humility, if I could interview Mr. Armitage, interiority, me, objectification, Peter Jackson, reality, Richard Armitage, the Armitage morass, the beard, the clothes, the energy, the eyes, the face, the fingers, the hair, the hands, The Hobbit, the hype, the legs, the real Armitage, the smile, Thorin Oakenshield, why Armitage?, work
Love it!! Casual Relaxed “Thorin” is a treat.
And I love how determined and purposeful he looks in the top photo. I would follow this guy anywhere.
I assume we weren’t seeing these earlier b/c they were trying to “protect” the charisma that they’d built around that character and this cut was deemed more appropriate for the ironic ComicCon audience. They cut out the “my favorite thing is walking onto the set” piece and replaced it with a bunch of stuff about Luke Evans, too, which I assume was considered more interesting to the CC audience.
Thanks for the caps from the snippet. I like it a lot, too.
mmmmm. Servetus’ heart beats just a little faster.
He looks very bulky!
Both his thighs are padded, right? Wow he’s got strong calves!
yeah, thighs are padded. He was wearing 40 lbs of extra gear, I thought I read somewhere, for this role.
Off to google how much 40 lbs is in kg!
OMG, 18 kgs? That’s HEAVY.
One of those late summer 2011 interviews mentioned the figure — I think that’s the correct number. He was doing workouts to improve lower back and upper thigh strength, iirc.
I think in some ways preparing for and shooting this film was about as difficulty physically as shooting Strike Back. No wonder he’s so lean but solid now.
Some opera costumes weigh twice that. A full suit of well-made plate armour is not quite that heavy, but with the stuff that goes under it, plus weapons, it can top 20 kg. If Richard stars in the Richard III, project, he’s really going to get a workout during the battle sequences.
yeah, and this is not the heaviest Hobbit costume either. I don’t remember where I read it but I thought I read that one of the “fat” dwarfs” had 40 kg of additional gear when fully dressed.
One advantage Armitage could bring to RIII would be his physicality, I would think. A king who can actually be convincing as a warrior.
I agree. For a king who was a general at 26, back when generals actually fought on the front lines, who saw plenty of action, he would have to have been a remarkable warrior. Richard Armitage has the physicality, the skills, and the discipline to give a magnificent performance in the role, but there’s no denying it’s going to be work.
Another reason he needs to do it in the not-too-distant future. Not only to look credible age-wise, but so that it won’t be quite so demanding on his middle-aged body. Of course, I understand NOW according to Twitter that you aren’t middle-aged until 55
so he’s actually got plenty of time.
Classy panties! Fruit of the Loom or Hanes or Lauren? Oh, right, 40 Ibs of thigh padding…
You could see the back and upper body padding in one of the shots from the NZ location where he’s taking a break, having something to drink. The boots seem to be padded, too.
he says here that’s actually 20 kg of extra weight. Man.

I did wonder exactly what he was wearing on his lower body. Shorts? Towel? Kilt?
Looks like a kilt to me. It does not seem long enough for Thorin’s breeches. He certainly couldn’t wear his own clothes and expect them to fit over all that padding.
I had meant to include in this post that one reason I liked the new publicity still was simply that we finally see a Thorin Oakenshield who looks like he could be a little frazzled. Guess I was too excited to remember to put that down. Geez.
Just a puddle of womanly essence right now.
Kilt, of course. What all he-men of the Anglo-Saxon/Norse eras wore. Skirts…
Just a long shirt.
No doubt why they were so potently virile right…no tightie whities for them
yeah, tighty whities are designed to restrain everyone’s desire and potency
Nice knees!
~ wait a minute!…He is wearing my grandmother’s favorites panties!
LOL Granny panties! Actually, those are his thigh pads.
I like his expression in this. And him being pictured hanging out with his colleagues.
I’m so glad you weren’t asked to pull the snippet. Just had to snaffle.
I didn’t realize until today that Jas had been asked to pull her GIFs. The RANet.com caps are still there, too — so it looks like people only got contacted if they posted something “moving.” Either that or I’m still flying under the radar.
Great pics, thanks Servetus.
Liked the collegial “hanging out” too, Jane. Very nice.
hard to imagine our serious Armitage actually just chillin’.
Thanks for all the comments.
