But I’m wondering if the extra confidence we’ve seen has anything to do with, or is a response to, Chop’s attitude. (Completely talking out my ass since I haven’t read the book and am only speculating.)
I think that’s a definite possibility. There’s a CinemaCon pic where he’s standing on stage, with his right arm sort of draped around Sarah Wayne Callies, where he looks as demonstratively physically confident as we have ever seen him (and there’s a facial expression there, as well) — this is what I was thinking of. Chop in the book is quite reckless and not especially worried about the consequences, living for the moment.
Is anyone going to talk about the Armitage wit in this? I nearly pee’d myself when he said “It’s interesting that there hasn’t been a movie like this in all of that time [since Twister] – but in the mean time there’s been a helluva lot of weather.” LOL.
His humor tends to be too subtle or off-beat for most interviewers, I think. It’s a shame, because he so rarely gets the laugh he’s waiting for. He is very funny, though.
I think, most interviewers don’t often get the answer because they are just focused on how many questions they can put into their timeframe. There is almost no real conversation possible. And we don’t see the interviewer’s face, maybe she got his words and smiled. Or … she couldn’t understand him because of all the noise around them?
This seems like an increasingly common strategy for him. He’ll say something rather absurd with a completely straight face — the only time interviewers seem to notice it is when it involves sexual innuendo. What I appreciate about it here is that it seems energetic and fun, as opposed to situations where it seems incredibly brittle (lots of moments like that in the AC interview) and thus reveals itself as coping mechanism. (Privately: I do this, too, and I wonder if he does it for the same reasons I do).
re: nervousness — he has always seemed to have a ton of nervous energy.
This conversation makes me think. Yes, he seems to be relaxed and witty. And he seems to enjoy himself. But I wonder at bit: if he is really that relaxed and confident as he SEEMS to be (and note, “seems to be” isn’t the same as “he is”) why does he have to bring Chop? If he can be himself and enjoy the convention, why did he a) show some signs of discomfort/stress then (or is it just nervousness? Or are nervousness, stress and discomfort the same here?) and b) bring those attributes with him at all when not actually needed? Or am I missing the point here?
A friend once told me, that I would only act “out of my normal self” if I feel insecure or want to protect myself. And it is true – if I feel good in that situation, I can be myself (or more myself) and thus relax and enjoy the event/time. Otherwise I put a wall between me and others – maybe in RA’s case his character Chop (or GoG or whoever is available at the moment).
I know, that the character isn’t far away from Armitage. I’m sure he thought about the person Chop while he flew from Leeds to the convention and maybe looked through his eyes to gain more information about how to play him in even more depth. Or was he Chop all the time BECAUSE the time was too short and “staying in thoughts” would be more comfortable for him?
I’m just throwing some thoughts in, I hope I won’t get stoned because of a different view. 🙂
there’s lots of old vid to look at — he has a ton of nervous energy, even in situations where you wouldn’t expect it (e.g., on stage at the Wellington benefit for the ChristChurch theater). He has some fidgety habits, which can be seen on vid since the beginning of his career. I’m more likely to suspect him of “acting” when he’s holding very still, because that doesn’t seem like his natural mode — fwiw. That said, he’s always seemed to be very to somewhat ill at ease in public appearances, since the beginning of his career, and it’s only abated somewhat since 2012 or so.
What I love best about all of the footage we’ve seen from WonderCon is how relaxed and playful he has seemed throughout. 🙂

It leads me to wonder what, if anything, he is carrying around with him of Chop at the moment.

i think — based on CinemaCon — some facial expressions and mannerisms, perhaps.

I know what photo you’re talking about. There’s a lot of Guy in the face and body language there. Or Chop. 🙂

YES!! I totally agree. I had wanted to start a post on “Guy looks” vs “Chop looks?” but the term is ending.

Yup. I am glad he keeps chipping away at his interviewers’ humour-resistance.

I think it might be how he keeps himself entertained through the necessity of being interviewed. I know it would be for me.
