Richard Armitage Online reports this morning, quoting the Daily Mirror, that there will be more Strike Back!
I’m squeeeeeing with a few extra eeeeee’s this morning!
ps. It’ll be interesting to see how they depict the USA. Porter in the U.S. should make for some great fanfic!

What’s really important to me is that Richard seems to continue to be in demand (as he certainly should be) and not want for work. I do agree with servetus, though – he needs a nice vacation at some point. Some danger sports, I reckon, and a bit of R&R.

I think I’ll try and hold off on the emotion until Sky1 makes an announcement.
I’ve always had doubts about Rover mostly because I heard another British actor talk about the fact that it requires a large time commitment and limits availability when role opportunities arise. And this was even a fairly big moviestar.

Yeah — and very unpredictable. You could turn down filming something because you’re in a play and then the public doesn’t like it and the play closes and you’re out of work.
It’s really much more affordable for me if he stays in TV and films. 🙂 He’s SO considerate.

iz4blue, you are probably right about the Rover! I don’t imagine a stage play pays quite as well as a TV series, either. While Mr. A is probably the most comfortable he has been during his career, somehow, I doubt that he can quite pass up roles which garner more widespread recognition and lead to more choices.
Tyme, we should transfer him to the Navy for a special op, then he can film in Halifax!

Regarding the desire for more shirt off action, God I hope so and I would love to see that fine English skin with a touch of tan! I am looking forward to seeing the John Porter character develop and evolve as the action of the first series gave us, IMHO, a different kind of character interaction than we usually see from RA.

I’m so hopelessly besotted with John Porter, the fact RA is continuing to do the voice work for Sky Sports HD gives me hope. I imagine TPTB saying: “Let’s keep that wonderful Richard Armitage busy until we can sign him up for a second series of Strike Back, shall we??”

I believe he has probably signed for it a long time ago. He was the first to talk about the possibility to do more and Sky would have been foolish not to require a commitment for more series from the start.
I, too, am wondering how this will affect The Rover and/or Spooks.

Considering the huge build-up they gave Strike Back, you would think the fact it was considered a success (and will likely do well for them in overseas markets, too)they would want to go ahead and lock in the key players, none being more key than JP himself. There is no SB without JP as played by Richard Armitage. Well, not for me, anyway.

I agree. assume that when he signed for the first series, he probably signed some kind of agreement to continue in the role if it were renewed, at least for a certain number of episodes or seasons — they wouldn’t take this much financial risk without guaranteeing they had their star available, would they? I remember that being the issue that kept Pierce Brosnan out of the James Bond role initially — he was contracted to continue with Remington Steele and couldn’t get out of it.
I assume he is basically done in Spooks, though I’d be happy to be wrong. At the end of this series he’ll have been in as many episodes as almost everyone else in the show except Peter Firth, won’t he?

I have this gnawing suspicion it is his last series of Spooks . . . I think back to all those comments about Guy having to pay for his crimes, and now his references to not knowing what Lucas’s fate will be and it’s in the writers’ hands . . . I don’t want to see another RA character die an awful death; but I do want him to pursue the projects he wants to do.

How would you describe John Porter? I was just about to start reading your fanfic of him when this news broke and I wanted to reflect on the character before I started reading. I have a much clearer picture of John Thornton and guy of Gisborne but Porter is still a little nebulous for me. Also, one pet peeve about the first SB is that they kept promoting that this was a story of Porter’s search for atonement**Spoiler** when actually it was Collinson’s search for atonement. BTW, enjoy your writing very much!

My take on John Porter . . . I see him as a man who loves his country and is extremely good at his job, who take great pride in his skill and competency, who was something of a rising star in the SAS before everything went to hell in a hand basket with the Bratton extraction.
He may be something of a killing machine, but he’s got a conscience; that’s why he couldn’t shoot As’ad in the first place.
John has a very tender and warm and loving side to him, too. I see him as a very tactile person.
Think of how gentle he was with poor Katie. Think of the scenes with his daughter. He doesn’t just take lives; he also nurtures. A contradiction, perhaps, but it makes for a more interesting and compelling character.
He wants the chance to re-establish himself, to prove he is still able to serve in an effective manner by helping retrieve Katie. He’s never stopped hoping for that second chance; that’s why he kept up with his workouts and handling weaponry.
He doesn’t want to be on the outside looking in anymore. It is almost like his life has been on hold for seven years.
My version of John Porter wouldn’t have and doesn’t continue the relationship with Danni. He has enough male pride and ego to be put off by the idea of being part of a honey trap.
But he is very physical man and yes, he enjoys sex and is an inventive and ardent lover. He’s been in one very long dry spell; one suspects his low self-esteem did help keep him from pursuing a sexual relationship outside of his increasingly unhappy marriage.
Porter is also a man blessed with a great sense of humour. He loves his daughter dearly and is desperate to re-connect; the marriage to Diane had, for all intents and purposes, ended long before.
I’d say John Porter wants his life back . . .

Oh, and I think Spooks for RA is done. Almost no one (romantic male leads anyway) survives past three series,and my gut tells me dear Richard has already moved on. Harry doesn’t count when speaking of leads. He’s the core of the show and above all of that. If they killed Harry, the show would probably be done. I don’t feel that way about it, but I know a lot of fans do.

Adam has done four series and so has Ros and both count as leads. Tom left after two series because MM wanted to move on. I think if he wants to RA could well do another series even if things look bad at the end of series 9. Others have come back from (fake) death before.
Word is that series ten has already been commissioned and RA is a guy who appreciated the security of a long running series, he may well do both Spooks and SB and they may work their schedules around him. But then it wouldn’t look good for the play and that’s why I have always been sceptical with regards to that.

Interesting about the “word.” I would love to hear more about that. May have to look at more Spooks places than I do. But I’ve actually kept myself from getting into the Lucas North character as much as some of RA’s other characters in order to save what’s left of my sanity. 😀
I’m confident RA could do another series of Spooks if he desires. I wasn’t thinking RA is done with Spooks because he’s not wanted. Far from it. He just strikes me as the type who would not want to prop up a story merely to have a part, and the writing in Spooks has deteriorated a little. Well, to be accurate it’s changed direction a little, and I don’t think it’s working quite as well as the earlier shows. But that’s merely my opinion. Spooks 7 was good, but Spooks 8 went down a bit again. I hope Spooks 9 makes me a liar, and hopefully, the writing would be very good if he were in Spooks 10.

I was disappointed overall in the writing on S8, although I think RA did a fab job as usual. The whole Nightingale arc had its problems; the disastrous casting of GOR as Sarah Caulfield simply sucked the life out of part of that series for me. I could never believe Lucas would have fallen for that creature. Please let the writing (and casting!) be back up to previous high standards in Spooks 9.
I do have to confess, as an American, if RA isn’t in Spooks 10, I won’t go out of my way as I have for other series (even ones not featuring the Luscious One) to watch it. Just as I couldn’t have watched RH 4 if there had been one without Guy.

Well, it’s time for Sky to confirm/deny the generally dubious basis of a tabloid report! It would be marvellous if there were an SB2 concurrent with a Spooks10 (incorporating Lucas for a fourth season). That would keep our actor nicely gainfully employed for another while. And we would not worry about him for a while. (Not that he’s likely to be on the shelf, anyway).

Knowing the precarious, fickle nature of the acting profession, I know worrying that work will dry up has to be on every actor’s mind. But dear Richard is so amazingly versatile, and not just in acting on film, but voice work alone, and possesses such a strong work ethic, I really think he should never have to fear going without work again. But then of course, I am partial to a certain TDHBEW. Come on, Sky, you have treated us well thus far, don’t keep us in suspense!!

For me the other issue that drives so much of my skepticism (until I hear it from a reliable source) is the times. Things are tight in a lot of quarters and best laid plans are often being thwarted by financing. As much as we all loved Strike Back, we don’t know what numbers Sky really expected no matter how good the numbers may have appeared or what the press may have or will report. So I can’t help but wonder: did the numbers fall short of what they were shooting for? Doesn’t matter about past numbers. What were they thinking? Were expectations met enough to prompt them to continue this show? And sadly, the press reporting their comments is not always an indicator, Even their own site is not a good indicator.
Just some thoughts, and I hope my business person isn’t spoiling the fun. I just can’t quite remove that hat.
I hope you all know that none of this makes me less anxious about this show. If anything, it makes me more anxious. I want to see John Porter! 😀

The mature, skeptical side of me says, “Don’t get too excited yet.” the hopelessly besotted fangirl in me says “SQUEEEEEEEEE . . . I want my JP!!!” So I know where you are coming from, girlfriend.

With Sky I don’t worry about money as much as I would with the BBC. Sky has money, the only question is on what they want to spend it. With regards to the ratings, they were nearly in the same league as American cult shows (that had time to develop a following for many years) and I cannot imagine that they are not satisfied with that. I would worry more about international sales, I have only heard that SB has been sold to Australia and Canada, nothing about the US. They wanted to compete with American shows and I think that might be very hard.
I think what makes the article slightly more credible is that they have information about future storylines and locations. Surely the idea not to film the whole series in South Africa must come from somewhere?

Hoping you are right, Jane. Sky certainly put some money into the whole Strike Back blitz (for which I will be eternally grateful). I do wish the series would be picked up here in the U.S. by somebody, as I am always pining for more people here to realize what a fantastic actor Richard is.

I kept reading that, too: Sky wants in to the U.S. market with its dramas. I see the anti-Americanism of the last two episodes as a big obstacle to that, though. Americans do not want to see their troops portrayed as cold-blooded murderers without redeeming qualities in a boys/toys shootemup. (We’re willing to consider that possibility in different genres occasionally).

I thought the same thing when I watched those last eps, uh-oh, some people won’t like that the Americans were the bad guys. Of course, I know good and well that sometimes we are, as much as I am loath to admit it.

Yeah, it’s not about what U.S. troops actually do in foreign countries, it’s about what the U.S. public wants to think about them.
I also want to clarify in case any U.S. marketer is reading this comment that this is not my position — I continue to watch things with anti-American strands in them. I’ve probably been acclimated by two decades of reading the news from other parts of the world, in which the U.S. is not the hero of every story.
I also wonder about the British actors playing U.S. people. Toby Stephens was really quite good, as good as I’ve ever heard — but that’s the kind of level of performance they’ll have to get if they want to enter the U.S. market with British actors (not Genevieve O’Reilly).

If this show were better written, people here would love it. They respond to good writing, and we have some well written shows that compete for Americans’ attention especially considering some cable fare. I’m not so sure that Strike Back is up for that. Not unless they get better writers. Let me put a finer point on that. A show is either plot driven or character driven. At this point, neither of those are substantial enough to really grab the American public.
In the meantime, bring on more Strike Back! Yes, cloak is back on. I felt a bit naked without it. 😉

As I have said, @RAF, the writing was, in my opinion, the weakest element of the show. You had a very talented cast, good production values, wonderful location shoots – but the scripts should have been better. With the kinds of quality fare we Americans now enjoy through cable and satellite programming, we do demand more.
(Heck, even USA, who used to have the schlockiest shows on TV, is producing some excellent, entertaining stuff these days).
Some roles in SB were too underwritten (Danni-what a waste of a gifted actress there) and why, after Orla Brady was so heavily promoted,did she just drop completely out of the picture? There HAS to be more cohesiveness between the eps or the various “movies” if they shoot it in the same style.
The clear disconnect between the last two eps and the first four, due to different director and writers, doesn’t need to happen again.

I think this is a great point, RAFrenzy. The stories are really simplistic, and the character development in the scripts is weak. Mr. Armitage adds as much as he can but it’s gotta be hard when most of what he does is offer one liners. I liked the major dramatic outing in the last episode but it was SO poorly written and the script direction for tears was really questionable.

Richard does indeed do the best he can with any script (look what he managed to accomplish with that cheesefest RH) but you wish the scriptwriters would create something more worthy of our very gifted and talented actor beyond one-liners, clever as some of them may be.
I also questioned whether Porter would have actually cried in that minefield–poor unstable Gerry, yes, but not Porter, at least as I envision him.
Richard did a marvelous job, of course, with the scene but it didn’t seem quite–right.

Agreed, Toby did an excellent job and the other accents would have to be equally up to snuff for it to pass muster. And while I also read and watch news from other nations’ perspectives, a lot of people here don’t – and they wouldn’t love the Americans-as-bad guys-vibe, I fear.
A suggestion for a guest role or if Toby is unavailable to continue his role: Damian Lewis. He does a very creditable American accent and he even resembles Toby.

I read in the AA forum that someone at C19 asked if they were thinking on doing SB2 and their answer was ‘they were *planning* another series’.
So my scepticism is about the Mirror making it sound as a confirmation, because after that first piece of news, a member of the AAforum asked SKY1 to confirm they were doing SB2 and the answer was ‘they can’t confirm it’, so maybe they’re brainstorming ideas or waiting SKY1 to give it green light. I don’t know anything about showbiz but there must a set of steps to be completed before someone can film/shoot anything…
If they are planning it, one of the basics to try and make it possible is to be somewhat sure of RA’s availability. Maybe in S10 LN makes a ‘Jo’: he is in S10 but only for a few eps in order to run to SouthAfrica or wherever they’d be filming it.

True though, from all you read, there are so many steps on the way to producing a series, so much depending on the dreaded viewer stats, the funding, etc.etc. Would like to see Richard Branson in the JP prisoner seat; we could all terrorize him into funding a Richard III series, instead of blowing his millions on hot air balloons….

Indeed it is. I just checked our newspaper’s website and saw a lovely compliment for our newbie roving reporter in a neighboring county, and that’s put a smile on my face for him.

Of course, Angie and Raf, rest assured that Dr. S knows who the ringleaders are, and expect your knuckles to be firmly rapped for disruptive behaviour! (Or not, as the wise professor S knows that the heat wave is exacerbating the effects of the Silly Season and it’s only to be expected in Summer School…)

This little bit a silliness was great fun and a simple manifestation of our desire to have Mr. RA gainfully and satisfactorily employed forever! See what happens when you leave the children unattended? Well, time to go earn my paycheck and then hopefully finish my dissertation. Love this blog!

I am always delighted when I can help make someone’s day,@fitzg. It was great fun! And RAFrenzy is right; it just shows how much we want our favorite actor to keep doing what he loves and does so well.
Our heat continues here and I do find a bit of lightheartedness goes a long way in lifting the weight of this muggy, humid air from my shoulders.
Also, as I discussed with some lovely senior ladies last week, life is far too short to behave ALL the time . . .

Dr. Servetus has always had a chaotic classroom. As one of my colleagues said to me after my most recent teaching observation: “why do you let your students talk so much?”

Oh I just loved reading these comments and I too hope that SB2 is on it’s way now, and I hope that they tighten up on some of the weaker elements of the show. Apart from The Convenient Marriage there is nothing else until Spooks 9 to look forward to now, so news of future projects is very welcome. Though I haven’t got desperate enough to consider watching The Golden Hour yet!

OK, so it will be a while, but IT’S CONFIRMED!! And that was enough to positively make my Monday and very likely my week! That – and the fact my “Convenient Marriage” audio book arrived today. I have to work tonight, but rest assured, I will be listening to a portion of Mr. Honey Tongue’s latest confection before beddy-bye.
And I can think of more John Porter on the way – and 10 eps instead of 6! Woo-hoo, indeedy do!!

While S.America and the U.S. have been mentioned for SB2 filming, a bit surprised that British Columbia wasn’t, so far. Big studio/production/industry infrastructure already in place. They did offer tax breaks too, not sure that’s still in place.
AND there is diversity of landscape: some rain forest, some desert terrain, a few 🙂 mountains, much ocean…

This will teach me to get a new laptop…I feel like I’ve missed so much. First, IMDB has posted a blurb that ABC-TV in the US has optioned MI-5. Well now, I can just see Lucas North opening the US Spooks branch office. THAT would be wonderful.
Second, about SB…I agree with servetus and RAFrenzy..the writing needs to improve. RA cannot just run about the world spouting one liners although he does more with them any any other actor, ever. There needs to be some character development because as I reflected on John Porter I realized that after the equivalent of 6 episodes i had a less clear idea of John than I did of Guy after the same amount of time. I do like that he is portrayed as a more human soldier, with a degree of fear (when the gun was placed against the back of his head and he flinched before steeling himself) instead of an automaton although the nun and others refer to him as a “machine” which I don’t necessarily agree with as a descriptor for John.
If the idea is to make him a one-dimensional character, for someone of RA’s talent that would be very regrettable and a more than a bit of a waste.
