Discombobulated day
So, sorry, little time today to think about Armitage. I’ve got to finish up preparing for our upcoming discussion of The Economic Consequences of the Peace, revise a PowerPoint on the Industrious Revolution, and get through the first 70 pp of Moll Flanders. Also, weather threatening again.
For some reason this image was on my mind today: I know the hair on his head is “enhanced” here, but what about the rest? Actual armpit hair or armpit hair wigs? What do you say, Armitage fans?

Oh dear! Let’s please not make him shave his pits Ladies! He already waxes his chest hair, right? Metrosexual men do not appeal to me. (I actually like men’s armpits — go figure!) It’s that shaggy wig that bothers me more.

Okay, so much for not getting sucked into this conversation!!! And here I was all smug and self righteous!!! Ms. Lady Writer, I am fairly certain that our man has had his gluteous maximus waxed for said nude scenes and/or “butt” shots. I have just crossed my own line…commenting on arm pit hair and butt waxing. Lord help me!

Most gents would require such–attentions–for said shots, especially the more close-up ones in BTS (Angie, stop salivating!!) Bless his heart, RA really must be the best sort of sport when you think about it. Waxing, fake tattoos, being tied up multiple times, thrown in a cage, forced to wear awful wigs and hair extensions and squirrels on his chin–he handles it all so well, methinks. What a pro!!

I have a low pain threshold due to the old FMS but also a high pain tolerance, which is a good thing. I guess it is all the nerve endings right above my lip that make me want to scream when she pulls that strip off . . . the eyebrows? Not so much.

I’ve always wanted to ask whether he dyed his hair. The pit hair is the same color as his hair in Sparkhouse and Cold Feet circa 2002, a sort of dark dishwater blonde. Then his hair has remained very dark brunette, almost black since North & South.

I’ve assumed that this particular pit hair is his natural color. When I first looked at the photo I looked at the left side and thought “that has to be augmented” but now I agree with whoever below said it might be the angle and the light.

I LOVE my husband’s armpit hair. I really do. I like to sniff it. It’s not the wierdest thing about me, either LOL While I am not into excessive body hair a la Robin Williams, I agree with Phylly–“metrosexual” does not appeal to me. I absolutely despise it when guys wax their eyebrows–a teensy bit of plucking of wild hairs is acceptable–and I like the little curly chest hairs on spouse’s chest.
Also, I just went and looked at screencaps from the scene at the prison where Porter has to strip. He seems to have a sizable amount of underarm hair in those shots, albeit not quite the amount in the “shaggy” scene (oh, that wig is soooooo sad).
(And I don’t think RA would wax his chest if roles didn’t require it. Somehow he doesn’t seem like the type . . . )

😀 Good subject for a Tuesday! The shock of Monday has worn off, and the reality of three more days to the weekend sets in…
Can’t imagine why a role should mandate chest waxing; will chest hair frighten the horses?
There are some close-ups (Strike Back) in which arm hair seemed noticeable, though fairer than on the pate. The stubble grows quite low on the throat, too. The consensus seems to be that dyeing is in the equation. And it does emphasize the actor’s features. So that’s all good. There is the possibility of some natural greying at 39, too. I certainly was. And REALLY envied blondes at that point!

Oh, yeah, he colors his hair, that’s a given. I guess that started with North and South. His natural color is more of a reddish brown. You can see the reddish glints in his hair when he’s out in the sun, even with the dark hair dye. The dark hair makes his blue eyes pop even more.
In between roles, you do see sprouts of chest hair, and considering his heavy beard and how much hair he has on his arms (and, apparently, underarms) I would expect him to also have chest hair. I think it’s the in thing to do with actors today–wax their chests.
@Fitzg, I have my dad’s wavy hair and blonde coloring, and my mother’s premature grey. This means I had more grey hair than my dad did when he passed away in his 80s and he was 40 years old when I was born.
I could get away with easy-to-maintain highlights for years until I got more than 30 percent grey in my early 30s. Then I had to go to overall hair color. I stick with blonde because my roots are now largely white, and the regrowth is a lot less noticeable than if I went with darker hair. I think Mr. A is getting some grey. I imagine him with grey at his temples and he looks incredibly distinguished. 😀

Just when I think we’ve covered everything there is to discuss about Mr. RA, you come up with yet a new topic!! I am sitting here trying to laugh quietly and it’s hard I’m telling you.
Those have GOT to be the hairiest armpits I have EVER seen and at 60, I’ve seen quite a few…no, I’m not a loose woman, just been to a lot of tracks meets, basketball games and pools. Ahem. And really? Chest waxing? I’ve now officially heard it all. ROTFLOL, Fitz. I’ll have to be sure and pass that warning on to our cowboys.

I read not too long ago in a TMI column in a magazine that entertainment mogul P Diddy, or Puffy, or whatever he is currently calling himself, makes sure he has no superfluous hair whatsoever on his body–chest, legs, arms, nether regions. I’m sorry, but I, as a quite feminine female, would never consider waxing EVERYTHING. Just getting my brows and upper lip done every six weeks is enough pain for me, thank you very much!!
I kind of like men to look like MEN, and not pre-adolescent boys, but oh well, that’s just me . . .
Oh, and I meant to mention earlier that “discombobulated” is one of my favorite words. It’s right up there with “serendipitous” 😀
I do have to wonder–DID they feel it necessary to add to Mr. A’s natural hirsuteness under his arms, and if so, why???

Angie, your favourite words are two of my favourites, too.
I think the dark hair was in evidence before North and South. Smug man at party and Lee are quite dark-haired. If you’ve seen the poster of Richard during his time at the RSC, he was quite dark, too, so I think the dark hair belongs to certain characters he played before, whereas it’s now part of his Richard Armitage image. How long can and should, he keep dyeing is disputable. There’s something off-putting about a wrinkly man with a dark head of hair, (neighbour two houses away, take note!) but Richard is still amazingly youthful-looking, so he can carry it off for some years yet.
The armpit hair is quite fascinating. I remember thinking that he was richly endowed in that area when watching Strike Back. It’s very noticeable when he’s hanging on that wooden frame. This is an erogenous zone, so the more hair, the better, I’d say. 🙂

Good point about the earlier cases of dark hair. Just as a lot of actresses color their hair for specific parts, it appears Richard has done the same depending on what role he was playing (I now recall it being quite dark for his role in Cleopatra).
I wonder sometimes if he’d like to go back to his natural color?
Oh, one of my uncles, who was a very handsome man in his youth (imagine Tom Cruise with deep brown eyes and you’ll get a good image) kept his hair colored black (in his youth it had been a dark brown, but never true black) after he got older and it really aged him (health issues didn’t help any, either). If he had allowed the premature grey he had inherited to show, he would have looked marvelous.

I don’t think there was a need to dye it before roles required black or nearly black because it was a nice brown. Depending on lighting, colour saturation of the film material etc. hair can look quite different. In some scenes from BTS it looks almost red (and his eyes bright blue-green), in others from the same film brown (and the eyes blue-grey). My own hair often looks black in photos which it is not, not even very dark brown.

Lighting, film material and also wardrobe choices all seem to play a part in his changeable colouring. The “cold” blue-based lighting in Spooks made his skin look paler, his hair, darker and his eyes as true blue as they have ever been (except as Monet, I would hazard to say).
In the bright desert sunlight and wearing olive drab, we got light green eyes and reddish highlights re SB.

Yes, Spooks has a very cool, blueish hue, N&S almost no colour at all, BTS is mostly warm and yellow and the Impressionists very bright in general, just like the paintings. I think his eyes are fascinating, they are a very light grey but reflect the colours of their environment, most notably the army green in SB.

Those eyes are so remarkable in many ways. Their changeable colour, the large amount of white of the eye, those gloriously long and abundant lashes (I do confess loving long lashes on very masculine men), the structure of the eye itself, all well framed by those bold and expressive brows. Beautiful eyes that speak volumes without words.
You simply cannot look away or be untouched by them (well, I can’t, anyway.)

The White Chocolate Macadamias are a favourite of mine too but I prefer the oatmeal ones minus both the raisins AND the cranberries and that would be the soft oatmeal, not the crunchy ones. And of course, for me, biscuits are those flaky buttermilk breads similar to scones that taste so good with butter and homemade preserves. 😉 Guy loves both choccie biscuits (cookies) and southern biscuits (fig preserves are his favorite). Boy has such a hollow leg!! And I am with you on the chewy soft versus crunchy cookie. I also prefer my brownies fudgy rather than cake-like. (Brownies would be a nice addition to the Dark Side . . .)

I do think it is his own armpit hair but maybe slightly back combed for the scene! The things that man endures for art! I’m sure some ladies would queue up for the opportunity to assist him in his preparations.
Re his hair colour, I would be interested to see what he does about it while he is NZ. I should think he will want to keep it very short if he is wearing a wig while filming and as for colouring it, would there be a need (apart from any possible SB2 requirements)?

He’s really put his hair through a lot the last few years, what with dying and hair extensions. Dying in particular is very hard on hair. If I were he, I’d choose to let it be itself for as long as possible, trimming as desirable / comfortable.

Dying and all the other things that have been done to his hair can’t have been good for it, or him for that matter. Just think of all the chemicals he has been exposed to in the dying process alone. So yes, I hope he can leave it to do its own thing for a while – other than having it cut that is.

I remember a lively discussion about the chest waxing on c19 – the conclusion was that without a waxed chest it would’ve been a nightmare trying to airbrush on those Lucas tattoos.
But I never understood why Guy had to have his chest hair off, unless it was because it was a family show… If ever a man was born to have a hairy chest, it’s Guy of Gisborne.
I don’t think the armpit hair is ‘enhanced’ (can’t believe I’m actually specualting about this!). It looks similar to the scene in Spooks 8:4 when he’s in bed with GO’R. I think it’s just the way the light is striking aforesaid hair in this particular shot.

Oh, but how nice Guy looked sans his shirt . . . maybe it was a family show, but TPTB knew the grown-up ladies liked The Hot Velveteen Henchman quite a lot . . . and so the gratuitous, but much-appreciated “trying on the armour” and “changing his tunic” scenes. And the “how can watching a character have a nightmare be so darned erotic?” scene. 😉

Did I miss something?? Did someone actually COMPLAIN about Guy having his shirt off?? I sure thought he looked terrific – shallow as that may be of me – and I have an idea that Lucy probably thought so too in the “armour” scene. Whose pulse wouldn’t speed up a little being THAT close to the man?

I don’t think anybody here in this post complained, but there have been complaints before by some fans about him removing his top for roles (and, uhm, bottoms in some cases). I am hopelessly shallow at times, of course, and I would NEVER personally complain when one of his characters feels the need to get more–comfortable. 😉
As long as it doesn’t make the dear, modest man too uncomfortable, of course.
Oh, I am guessing lovely Lucy didn’t mind that scene one little bit. Guessing she was feeling just a bit “stirred” herself.

Re: the old chesthair question: we never saw any chesthair in his roles, not even as John Standring who would never have heard of something like men waxing their chest. However, when he was between roles (or didn’t had to do shirtless scenes) pics as himself from events or photoshots turned up that showed a little bit of hair in his collar. So apparently he did wax for roles but not in real life.
In SB he definitely HAS chesthair, only it is so little that you need a magnifying glass to see it. It is visible in the scene with Dani and in the scene when he is “crucified”. So the riddle is solved, it is there, but very little. He once said that as a boy he wanted to have chesthair like Micheal Praed from Robin of Sherwood and drew hairs on his chest with a black pen! Perhaps later he thought that nothing is better than only a little, after all nothing has been in fashion for quite some time now.
re: his real haircolour: definetely more a nice brown with a hint of red than “dishwater blond”. His stubble has a hint of red as well.

His real hair colour reminds me of my husband’s (before Spouse started going grey) and Spouse has a lot of red in his beard when it grows out. It’s a really lovely colour, although I admit the really dark hair is very sexy on Mr. A. I hadn’t heard his story about drawing in chest hairs with a pen, that’s precious. 😀

Like the girls have already said above, metrosexual guys that don’t appeal to me.
I think the hair on the male chest adds masculinity, and RA gets rid of them just for the characters. But admit that I like to look at his gray hairs (maybe because, despite my age I have gray hairs and dye it too). Only that for me, gray-haired guys like RA, look really sexy

Ania, my husband often covers his grey hair up with “Just For Men” hair colour, but I like the grey. It suits his colouring. I thought Cary Grant was just gorgeous after he let his hair turn silver.
I like seeing the grey in RA’s hair and beard and chest hairs, too. I find it somehow endearing and sexy.
Grey does NOT do anything for people like me with yellow undertones to their complexions, alas. Hence the salon visits!! My mother had a dramatic and totally natural grey streak through her medium brown hair which later turned white (the streak and then all her hair). Grey and white hair can be very beautiful . . . although I am sure RA will keep his at bay in order to play various roles.

I agree — just a little gray would be distinguished. However, his spotlight bio suggests that he’s still advertising himself as capable of playing 30s, so that would suggest he should keep it under wraps.
Wonder what color those eyes will turn when his whole mop is grey: mmmmm.

Yeah, I know as an actor he has to keep his options open regarding range of ages, and “grey” equate “older” in most minds. It would be fun to see him play a role where he is aged a bit and they give him grey hair to see what he looks like.
Since my eye colour does the same sort of changing, I guess I need to try on a grey wig and see what it does to my eye colour, and I will get back to you on that, Servetus. 😉

Yes, with Thorin pushing the 200-year mark, I would suspect Richard’s beard and wig will likely be of a silverly hue. I think he is going to be a very distinguished-looking dwarf.

They did give him a touch of grey as Monet aged in The Impressionists and it made me think that if he is till acting when he IS grey (and not behind the camera) that he would still look as wonderful as ever!!

He is one of those actors, like Gregory Peck or Paul Newman, who is going to continue to age well, I suspect. Combination of good genes, that marvelous bone structure and a healthy lifestyle.

I’m quite convinced that the underarm hair is all his and that it shows his naturally fairer colouring. In the Hood Academy shots his arm hair is noticeably quite blondish too. In some pics where he is not acting and his shirt is open at the neck I rather like the fact that some chest hair can be seen, such as in the the “tight jeans” shots outside the studios!! YUMM!! In more than one shot in SB where his chest and even the lower part of his neck can be seen in close up, he definitely has chest hair but so light in colour that it is not that visible. Perhaps the strong South African sun could have bleached it a bit. After all the waxing he has obviously had to have, not just for Spooks, but for other roles as well, maybe his chest hair has become less over time. I noticed in a close-up shot of his right arm in Spooks 9 where the “moving tatoo” was shown they’d had to shave that part of his arm to apply it! Never could figure our why it was “moved” in the first place, but that is a minor detail compared with all the other travesties in that series even though his acting was superb as usual!!

Body hair is often a different colour than the hair on our heads, too. The hair on my arms has remained the white blonde of my childhood even as my blonde tresses began to darken. I still think our Mr. A could make a believable blonde in the dark honeyed blonde category, because of the lightness of his body hair–as opposed to, say, Colin in that Alexander movie, where his heavy black eyebrows and beard stubble looked so incongruous with those golden locks.
I know from first hand experience having had my brows waxed for a considerable amount of time, the hair does begin to diminish.
If they had kept the darned tattoo where it was located in the first place, they probably wouldn’t have had to shave the poor man’s arm . . . The Mysterious Case of the Moving Tattoos. *sigh* I was waiting for them to reveal his tattoos were fake along with his identity as Lucas North. It would have fit right in with all the other nonsense . . .

The theatre of the absurd. Hey, with deadlines and possible snow on the way again to LA and tummy troubles, et al. I need something ridiculous to ponder regarding a fellow who is simply sublime . . . sometimes my brain just needs some fun time!! Apparently I am not alone in this . . .

LOL! Cooperative he is, but he might get a bit suspicious if I started wanting to photograph his armpits (“no, honey, I don’t want your face . . . just your lovely armpit hair!!”) . . . me sniffing them provides him with enough baffled amusement. 😀
