Can’t take my eyes off of you

It’s a grapefruit day, so I should be careful what I say. Don’t want to be too overwrought. But oh, Mr. Armitage, you have moments of beauty past contemplation. The way you make everything curve so gently in Lucas’s face here is a joy to behold. Ears, jaw, lips, nose, eyebrows, hairline …. mmmmm.

Shutting up now.

  1. (Be on the lookout for some sort of reference to grapefruit in the final installment of Truce, Servetus. Which just MAYBE I will finish tonight . . . so, so close)

He has moments of absolute, unalloyed, sheer, breathtaking beauty. In studying the screencaps for my videos, I have found myself in awe at times of it. And also so very impressed at how that beauty morphs with his different characters.

    Hang in there.

And the grapefruit is indeed a success. I promise. 😉

  3. SPOILERS

This was it, this was the episode when I just knew that I had to write about this character. RA was quite simply phenomanal in this episode. The cheeky start when he asks if Ros wants hin to get croissants. The unbelievable chemistry that he had with Dean. How calm and confident he was. How our normal cerebral Lucas got to kick a few butts. The final scene when Dean is shot os just gut wrenching. Anybody who thinks that Lucas and John Porter are essentially the same should compare this scene with the scene when Gerald Baxter is killed. The reaction and emotions are completely different

    • I totally agree. This is my favorite episode in Spooks 7, definitely a contender for favorite Lucas North episode over all.

    • This is absolutely one of my favorite eps of Spooks, too. And I totally agree–when you compare those two characters in those scenes, well–there it is. Two different men with two different reactions to a tragic moment. Other than their MI-5/MI-6 connection, I see no similarity between JP and Lucas. From the beginning of watching John Porter, he struck me as very different from Lucas, anyway, and that feeling didn’t change. This is no actor who plays essentially the same character over and over again. And yes, the ending of this ep gets to me every time, too.

    • Yes it’s amazing isn’t it ? I love that episode . I never tire of it.

Lucas and Porter are definitely not the same by any means. I’m with Khandy there. Two different men with totally different mindsets; and with completely different performances from mr A.

I too will be sad to see the end of Truce. Grapefruit eh ? Very interesting.

    • No matter how many times I have watched that episode – and I’ve lost count how many – I still recoil in shocked horror and stop breathing for a moment or two. So yes it may indeed be my favourite from S7.

I’m also in agreement with those who see Lucas and JP as two totally different characters. I just re-watched Pilot for the GG series this afternoon and marveled all over again how he manages to become such a completely different person in each role that he plays. As Hermione commented in the S7 extra he is “sublime”!! Oh dear!! Am I back at the Vodka again? At least Servetus is sticking with the grapefruit!!

    • How serendipitous. I’m just about to watch that episode tonight. I’ve been rewatching S.7 all week (thanks to Khandy’s story – I’ve fallen in love all over with Lucas pre-John). The one thing I’m sad about is that I bought S.7 off of iTunes and it doesn’t give the extras you get with the DVD. So I’ve missed the Hermione interview. Don’t suppose someone has put that one on YouTube?

  5. That was a good episode, wasn’t it? Taut and suspenseful, but with plenty of “Malcolm obtains futuristic weapon using improbable computer program” nonsense. I’m also recalling that as one of the first episodes where we got to see a decisive, resourceful Lucas in action.

    • I love the “Malcolm obtains futuristic weapon using improbably compute rprogram” stuff, too. I just watched 6.8 last night, and was so impressed by how Malcolm used code he wrote on the spur of the moment and deposited onto a flash drive to foil a computer program that was going to put down the entire US satellite system for months.

  7. Love that word “overwrought” Servetus. I can just hear RA’s “Lady Denny” saying it to Venetia with that tremble in his voice!! Always makes me giggle even though the way he voices all the characters in the audiobooks he narrates are just one more thing that puts me in awe of his talents.

Richard as Lucas is simply amazing. THIS is the Lucas North I know, love, admire, respect and believe in.

  11. Oh, what a sight to behold! The tension, the concentration. A favourite episode of mine in all of Spooks, and a highlight of series 7, my favourite series. The scene in the safehouse, where Lucas reveals that his father was a Methodist minister was beautiful – how they bonded, and how obviously Dean lacks and yearns for a father figure in his life. It is funny how he tries to imitate Lucas when he speaks to his mother later! Every time I watch it I think that Lucas is wasted in MI5. He should be a teacher, in a boys’ school, teaching languages and literature. I know he would be inspiring 🙂

The MI6 creep, Sands, was truly evil, he even frightened Ros a bit, and I actually thought that he would come back in a later series to kill her.

Poor Dean. What a cruel ending.

D*rn, the producers who ordered lovely, brave Lucas to be destroyed by turning him into an amoral terrorist cum drug dealer should be , well, you can imagine what I want to do to them.

Oh, the beauty of Lucas/Richard. Breathtaking. I liked his body in this episode – he was still very slim, but not as emaciated as in the first two episodes. Oh, and I am in love with his skin, as you know 😀 – I just want to touch it and the thought of how it feels amkes me drool, LOL!

    Uhm, I think I said too much…

    • yes, Lucas is a real role model here. This is off topic but it’s something that so many young people these days lack. I’m not sure why. But it means that you can have a lot of influence on a young person through even a brief encounter — and also that we should think about how we behave in these settings.

You just said what many were thinking: the voice of a generation.

      • So we are back to the basic statement you already went through so many times: is it about him, or is it me, or combination of many things?
Those days prove us that part of the effect he has on us is coming from our own perception of him, which is biased, or modified depending among others by our state of mind and (can I say it?) hormones, …

He is THE Alfa male, no question asked. And we, females do react to this as well.

Far from me the idea to reduce the effect of him or his work to just testosterone. Obviously, we all agree on the fact that Mr. A. is such a deep, talented and sensitive human being.
I just wanted to point out that basic “animal like” vibes also have a part in the attraction.

        • I think that must be true (“animal” vibes) and yet I wonder how that gets through the screen.

I was thinking yesterday that it’s *really* good for him that I’ll never meet him. The effect must be even more intense in person.

Or maybe it’s that hormones cause certain kinds of perceptions in our minds to become more intense?

          • Well, I had thought I has successfully put this RA addiction behind me. How wrong I was. It’s back, with a vengeance. I even thought I had figured out why I was so drawn to him and had convinced myself that I could get passed it. How wrong I was. Servetus, as you know, there are many reasons why it’s been re-ignited but now, I’m not even sure I want to shut if off. Last night, I even dreamed about him…and boy was it ever a good dream. Unfortunately, one of my cats woke me up right in the middle of the best part. Darn! For now, I’ve decided to shut off the brain, stop thinking about why he has such a pull on me, stop feeling bad about that and just enjoy it. I need a little sunshine in my life.

No doubt our hormones do have a certain effect–but it is also interesting to note Mr. Armitage ignites these feelings in females of all ages and phases of life. I don’t have “grapefruit” days anymore–but I sure do have days when I crave, crave, crave RA.

            @Teutcher,

Don’t feel silly or pathetic, so many of us feel exactly as you do.

When I went on the cruise last year, I took my Zune with several RA vids on it so I could enjoy his image while chilling on the Serenity Deck. Of course, I check in here when I get free moments during the day and always start the day checking RANet for the latest news and the POD.

And who is it who has made no less than 14 RA videos since March 16? And you think YOU’RE obsessed? I rest my case. 😉

            @ Angieklang,
Sorcerer, that might be some new path to explore, …
Magnetism and vibes might all come from there actually…Are we on a spell, then? Don’t want to get out of it.

  15. I’m going to be quite honest here, even though I know I sound TOTALLY pathetic, but there are days when all I want to do is sit and gaze at him, in whatever form that may take, be it DVD, screencap, vid or pictures on my computer. When I was away for the weekend recently I wasn’t sure how I would “survive” without doing that as there was no Internet connection, no phone (except a pay-phone) and because of the mountainous location no cell phone connection either. Of course “survive” I did and admit to enjoying the peaceful atmosphere away from it all; but just in case I suddenly suffered severe “withdrawal symptoms” I had slipped a picture of “Lucas” from S7 inside my journal!! Yes, I did have to take a couple of peeks when my room-mate was doing something else (she has NO idea of this obsession) but I was very happy to be home again to indulge in this fantasy when the mood strikes me! Ask me to explain this?…that would be impossible! Can’t begin to, even to myself. So you see Servetus, the title of this posting is unbelievably apt in my case!!

It does not sound pathetic, but so familiar… Sneaking from the kids and DH to watch just one hint of a picture of Mr A. on Dr Servetus blog when coming home from work….
Because a full day at work is unbearable without being able to get “a fix”, … How could I call it?!?

But I somehow wondered: How a thirty something years old, mother of three can sink in such a ridiculous, girly way of behaving….

        • I think that’s a great thing! It isn’t ridiculous at all. It’s a wonderful thing to have passionate feelings, whatever age we are. And RA is most conducive to passion. I’m rather hoping I still feel such passion when I’m well into my 70s too. My mom’s your age and she was pretty into Mr. Thornton when we watched it together not long ago…She might be a convert yet.

        • @Teuchter, just a little follow-up…I showed my mom the Keffiyeh light green picture – winner of the Servetus survey during Fans2 and she was most definitely smitten. She called him ‘un vrai ténébreux’ (Frenchies here will know what I mean – something to the effect of dark/mysterious). I think we might have another convert on our hands. What clued me in was when she was watching N&S with me a few weeks back she said at the end of e.4 – ‘is it already over?’ – this from the woman who usually falls asleep within the first 15mins of a movie. And she agreed he was much sexier than Colin Firth (although we both still like Mr. Firth.)

          • Loved to hear that about your mom calexora! It is always a good feeling when someone “gets” him after seeing either a picture of him – in this case the light green eyes (who can resist his eyes I ask?) or something he has starred in. I could guess the gist of the French phrase you quoted! I hope she continues to be an admirer of his talents. I don’t think I would find it possible to sleep with him on the screen in front of me!!

N&S was a series that resonated with so many of us. I loaned it to a girl at church and when she returned it, admitted that although she normally did not watch TV in the afternoon, she had put it on, and as she said herself, “four hours later…..!!!” I know the feeling! Once you start watching it you don’t want to stop!! She did not become a “convert” as far as I know but at least she appreciated what a wonderful series it was and was especially taken with RA!!

Moreover, there is NO age to feel, dream, love and DARE…
Thanks G… and it might even get better with time.
And we have a French expression to support this: “The best soups are made in the older pots…”
So I hope to be still be moved as you are when I will reach your age.
I also wondered sometimes what he might think if he ever found out about our giggling…
What might impress him should not be the giggling, but the overwhelmingly tremendously huge number of giggling happening at once.

Like the ladies here, if even for a moment didn’t look at one of the web with RA, then I decide my day to be wasted. And still and still ask myself why is that? What is wrong with me that I can not stop? I conclude that, also after reading the comments (reaction) by other ladies, that everything with me (us) is OK. It seems to me that most of us have just a kind of sensitivity. And this sensitivity makes me prone to ArmitageEffect (or as I call it magic of RA). • Ditto. I think this man should come with a warning: DO NOT GAZE UPON, LISTEN TO, OR READ ABOUT at your own risk.

The following side effects have been reported by at least 99.99% of people partaking in RA. Many of these side effects can be managed, but most will not go away on their own over time:

      – increased sexual desire or fantasizing (may extend beyond RA)
      – dizziness, particularly prevalent when RA is taken during ‘grapefruit’ days
      – drowsiness, likely if RA dose exceeds 12 consecutive hours
      – nervousness should RA be encountered in RL
      – sleep disturbance (but may be pleasurable if RA-related dream occurs)
      – dependance on internet, DVDs, audiobooks that contain RA,
      – development of technological skills in order to better express fascination and love of RA (or to facilitate finding RA)
      – fast or irregular heartbeat, when listening to or looking at RA (or products that contain RA, such as Guy, Lucas, John’s’)
      – fast talking and excited feelings or actions that are out of control
      – appearance of strange, unexplained behaviour such as internet surfing in public areas to get RA fix
      – excessive RA-related expenditures

Seek immediate medical attention if any of the following occur:

      – Difficulty breathing
      – Uncontrollable screaming when RA is encountered in RL

After you stop taking RA (that is, if you are able to), your body may need time to adjust. The length of time this takes depends on the amount of RA-related products you were consuming and how long you used it. During this period of time, check with your favorite RA-fansite if you notice any of the following side effects as they may be able to recommend a support group:

      abnormal dreams
      agitation
      anxiety
      difficulty concentrating
      dizziness
      headache
      nausea
      trembling or shaking
      sensations similar to electric shocks

Some people may experience side effects other than those listed.

He doesn’t have a crush on RA (that he admits to) but well, he did go out of his way to find Spooks S.7,8,9 after he watched Strike Back and consumed all of these in less than a week…So I suspect there are many men (of all inclinations) that might secretly like/admire him too :).

          • You should come up with that list calexora! I think it would be a long one. I honestly believe he has done wonders for me! I feel YEARS younger than I really am. I also believe that there are men to whom he appeals although not in the same way perhaps as he does to us. I think they would find him a man’s man! One of my sons was incredibly impressed by the scene in S8 in which Lucas has that flash-back to his time in prison when he was about to hang himself. He found it amazing what he did with, as Richard said, was essentially a stage direction, “Lucas considers hanging himself” and he said he found it really difficult because “it’s psychologically how does a character get to that point” before he “does something as shocking as that!” Looking at that scene always has a profound effect on me as he makes you feel his pain. I cannot fathom how anyone could watch it and NOT be moved. This scene is another reason why Lucas’ character assassination in Series 9 upset me so much.

            • I know, that scene is arresting. Sometimes I have one of his shows playing in the background while I’m doing something else. But there are few particular scenes (like that one) throughout his body of work that, every time they are playing, I have to stop and give it my full attention.

He has such talent – to be able to get himself in the mindset to convincingly convey what that character would have been going through at that point, is just amazing to me. I imagine he must have a lot of empathy for others if he is so adept at putting himself in other’s shoes.

  19. I could say I’m having a later-middle age crisis. But the gentleman’s acting expertise overcomes the scruples. 😀 Just discerning women, we are. Is there a talent-scout job going anywhere?

  20. I believe Angie told me some time ago that we all have the “good taste” gene when it comes to RA and that is why he affects us the way he does. Can I be EXTRA silly for a moment and ask, could there be such a thing as an RA gene? It would be something we women of good taste just “have” and so can accept it without question regardless of age or marital status; not let it bother us in any way, nor question our sanity; not think we are weird or unusual; be happy that it will always be there and never diminish; then just sit back, accept it for what it is and enjoy the ride!! Told you it was silly!!

  21. Doesn’t bother teuchter love! Son just rolls his eyes. Then did internet research and presented the Gently DVD for Christmas.

Very practical in RL, so family and friends forgive the (occasional) flights of fantasy etc.

Seriously, nothwithstanding a long “relationship” with the Scot, this bloke’s talent is of a different (sort of similar, but not quite) nature. He is an actor.
