Legenda 31: Stuff worth reading

[Legenda offers a brief, non-inclusive index of stuff I noticed and enjoyed since the last episode. It doesn’t usually include materials presented on the major fansites, which I love dearly, but which are linked in the sidebar. Because I always forget or just miss stuff, please add additional pieces of interest via link in the comments.]

It feels lately like there’s more and more to record. The suspense level about The Hobbit is rising among fans despite the frustration with practically no news about Armitage. I know I wanted to finish writing a few things that have been on my mind before the publicity storm for The Hobbit overtook us — because if it’s anything like last July, there will be something to think about and react to nearly every day, and there’ll be little time for longer thoughts. There’s also the ongoing question of how our world will change (and I guess newer fans now will have a taste of what happened when wider circles started to discover their little secret). We’ve asked this question before and my position based on those discussions is: less than we expect on our worst days, but more than we’re comfortable with even on our best ones. I know this is an issue for me, too; I’ve been really excited about meeting totally new fans, but admit that the Hobbit fans have annoyed me substantially more than once. We’ll do our best to be welcoming to new fans, I know!

So here it is.

Consider supporting Angie’s trip to Comic-Con. (She will also take good wishes and prayers.) What should she ask him if he’s there and she sees him?

Fanfic:

  • April’s Violet gives us chapter 7 of “Cruelle Splendeur” (Guy of Gisborne; in French).
  • “The Saga of Vaenomar” goes to chapter 12. And Vaenomar gets something she wants.
  • OT fanfic: Hedgeypig, she of RANet.com and DF, is posting chapters of a book she wrote for a creative writing course on wattpad called “Parliament of One.” Although paranormal stuff is not my thing, it’s another impressive example of Armitage-inspired creativity.

  1. Thanks for the shout-out, Serv. Sir Guy reminded me to tell you he is sincere about wishing to repay everyone for supporting me. And you know how–appreciative he can be. 😉

  3. Servetus I couldn’t agree with you more re. the “bashfulness” issue! I want him to be successful on his own terms and follow his own path, and stay true to himself all the way. I’m fairly sure The Hobbit will open a lot of doors for him even if he stays in the background during the promotion period. I fervently hope he won’t have to do things that are against his nature in order to achieve his career goals. And like you, I think he’s done well so far!

    • This has a personal angle for me; I was thinking of trying to write about it today but it might be too convoluted.

  5. We haven’t seen much of Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett or Hugo Weaving either. I think the major Hobbit stars are being deliberately held back until the main publicity rush starts, so that they still have something fresh to say and we don’t feel we’ve seen it all already. Not that we would get bored with seeing Richard! I’m OK with this – it’s nice that the costume designers, caterers, location scouts etc. get their chance in the limelight and the glimpses of how the film is being made increase the sense of anticipation. The major stars will be all over the media soon enough.
Re the Hobbit fans – I think they are as protective of their favourite book as we are of our favourite actor. Not all of them could initially see Richard as Thorin, but especially since the trailer I think more and more of them are being won over. I’ve never had any doubt Richard would make a wonderful Thorin – well, not since I got my head around the idea of a 6’2 dwarf. The trailer just sent chills down my spine and I can’t wait for the film.

    • Nice point about the major stars, and this is a comparison I can’t make because I don’t really follow this project apart from Richard Armitage.

re: Hobbit fans — most of them are in a really different demographic from me, and I suspect that plays a big role in my reaction to the some of the things I read. However, it’s also a reason that I haven’t followed the project very closely. I hope Armitage fans can do their best as representatives of Armitageworld … 🙂

  8. Thanks Servetus for the triple mention. My site stats have been going crazy 🙂 I’d also be honoured if you’d put me on your blogroll. Maybe someone will wander into my neck of the woods and find something they like there 🙂

  9. Speaking of Hobbit fans — I found this video of an artist drawing Thorin. This doesn’t look exactly like Thorin (or RA), but that’s not what caught my attention. I’ve always found it interesting to watch people draw/paint because of all the layers and details they add to the drawing as seen here:
