Thorin at Denny’s? Really?

Breaking at TORn: Denny’s is Middle Earth’s diner. Trading cards to be collected. Servetus blinks.

[ETA: for non-U.S. readers unfamiliar with the concept, here’s the Denny’s home page.]

    • G-d, I know.

I lived for two years in a town where Denny’s was one of the better major restaurant choices and ate there a lot and when I left I resolved I wouldn’t anymore — haven’t been in a Denny’s since May of 2001 …

  3. The joke in our family is that nobody *goes* to Denney’s, they *end up* there.

The last time I ended up at a Denney’s was at back in June, at 2am, during my last stint as a roadie with a band. No other place was open. LOL

“… we’ll have somewhere to go to kill some of the time until December 14th!”

Ok, we need somewhere to go. But, really, Denney’s?????

    • I think that’s exactly right. It’s the place where you go b/c nothing else is open at that time of day or it’s the best option in the place you happen to be.

However, I was just reading their website — they are listed by a magazine for African-American entrepreneurs as a top 40 corporation for cultural diversity, and they are also the largest single sponsor of Save the Children.

      • Well, they just went up a bunch of notches on my respect board. 🙂

      • The suspicious side of my nature wonders how much of their current ranking is the results of massive damage control given their fairly steady “history” of race related issues.

        • Interesting. I’m tempted to ask, “what history?” but I want to keep this blog politics free …

        • Maybe you could explain generally?

          • I vaguely recalled some incident about people of color receiving exceptionally poor service in the relatively recent past and did a quick Google search and found that there are a series of such allegations dating back to the early ’90’s with Denny’s. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

  4. What, were McDonald’s and Burger King already booked with merchandising? I was really looking forward to fighting a 7 year old for the Thorin Happy Meal toy! 😦

    • Yeah, I have to say I feel like I’m somehow getting taken here. I would have bought a lot of Happy Meals to get the “right” toy but I don’t know how many Grand Slam breakfasts I want to order.

      • Yeah, that requires getting out of the car and actually sitting down at Denny’s…at least you can just swing through the drive through at McD’s and grab the happy meal – and, you can sub and iced coffee for the soda (for an upcharge)! How cool is that!

  5. This city actually has TWO Denny’s!! I suppose that makes us “world class”? Now, trying to imagine a Denny’s in Hobbiton. Or Dibley…A take-out stall in Nottingham Castle? Nottingham menu, please. Slab of half-cooked boar’s head, bowl of pottage all-day breakfast…

  6. Because of the ingredients they use, I cannot eat at Denny’s. There aren’t any locally. If there were a Thorin toy in a Happy Meal or the BK equivalent, I might be tempted…

    • Plus you could always give the food to a beggar or something.

      • In a town where one hardly ever encounters a beggar, I’d simply show up at the home run by the Hermanitas with a cartload of food in time for lunch.

        • I’m glad that’s true — what one hears about Spain in the news lately suggests a different story. Glad the Spanish are watching out for each other.
