Non plus ultra. Richard Armitage repays every effort on his behalf

I have *got* to work today.

And yet I find myself crying.

This morning when I woke up, it was euphoria and relief of tension. It all went so well. I was whistling “It’s Almost Like Being in Love” in the car on the way to work. What a day this has been, what a rare mood I’m in!

And now I’ve read this message several times and I am just absolutely beside myself. That Richard Armitage would stop, in the hours just before one of the biggest moments of his life, to be in contact with fans, to thank US. When he is the one who does the work, he is the one we should be thanking. And that he looks forward to saying thank you.

All I could keep on saying here would be burbling at this point. I have more to say about last night (but my role is also a great responsibility). There’s also going to have to be some site cleanup as I was doing the equivalent last night of artillery fire screencapping.

To the literally thousands of new visitors who came overnight — welcome. We fans of Armitage hope you saw something last night that intrigued and you want to find out more.

And Mr. Armitage, in case you do see this, I just don’t even know what to say. I can’t hug you. But I love you so much right now. So much.

You may be grateful — but in giving me so much, you have repaid every second of effort tenfold.

  1. I haven’t seen the red carpet and interview from the Hobbit premiere, but it must have been great ! 🙂

I will watch the videos and read the many blogs about this. 🙂

  2. I would struggle to voice what I feel about last night. Generally I attempt to stay vaguely detached from the online madness but I still avidly read my Twitter timeline and the great swathe of related blogs and such-like that make their way to my inbox for RA news, considering carefully before joining in. However, he was my last thought as I curled up in bed last night…I found myself almost praying for him (almost because I have very confused beliefs 😉 ), hoping that he knew just how much goodwill was winging its way across the world to Wellington. I can’t describe how it made me feel when I woke to find he’d sent us a message. Wonderful man!

    • I think he must have known. And I think the positive sentiment supports people even if it is not prayer per se. I am having a hard time putting my own reactions together or explaining them, myself.

  3. My rational brain is warring with my emotion right now as I sit here at my desk (thanking G-d my office mate is not here) with big fat tears rolling down my face. The last 24 hours have helped me better understand that special something that drew me in and kept me interested. Just when I think I have a handle on it, this amazing individual reaches back and renews it all. It all just makes me so happy. Thank YOU Mr. Armitage – my family thanks you, my students thank you but especially I thank you for touching my life. I can’t wait to see what you do next!

    • It’s really true. It’s interesting to me because portray fandom as this thing that takes away energy, but that’s not what it is at all. It lets us give energy to others.

      • Woah – who says fandoms ‘take away energy’?

One would only have to view fan footage from the ‘Beatles’ or even “Elvis Presley’ mania days, to visually see that being a fan is about feeling an EXPLOSION of LIFE ENERGY. To me, Fandoms just make for a nice harnessing and re-directing of that energy with others.

At least that’s how it appears to me. 😉

        • The people who think that essentially fandom is narcissism, the people who think that what fans do is irrelevant or shaming. I’m not saying that’ smy position, just that it’s a view one hears regularly.

  4. Four hours’ sleep. “And was it worth it?” Unlike Geraldine’s experience: YES IT WAS! To see the prominance given to Richard Armitage by Peter Jackson in the proceedings. To read the letter. To admire the tie clip! 😀 And just to rejoice with him in having reached this career pinacle.

  5. Meant to say, too – the screen caps were an added bonus! Thank you for them.

    • It was mean that the day after had to be my busiest week day; on the other hand, if the event had been timed even slightly differently I couldn’t have observed it so closely.

  7. He was on my mind when I went to bed last night (having already seen the message) and my first thought on waking today. That he was thinking of us, at such a momentous time, absolutely overwhelms me…such a darling, wonderful man.
I add my thanks to fitzg’s for your screencapping and comments. I didn’t see them until leaving chat, gosh, you were busy!!

    • I absolutely agree with you Servetus and was thinking along the same lines re the message. I think it says a lot about the man that he took the time (apparently right before the premiere) to contact his fans directly through his message. I think it means he’s aware of the activity in the fandom and he knew how excited we all were for him last night and how much we’ve anticipated this moment for the past 2 years.

      • I think he’s always been aware of what’s going on the fandom, sometimes more, sometimes less. I also think he really cares what happens in the fandom, and that’s one think that might make his contacts with us difficult. I’m glad he did this because it is also a sign that he understands what is happening with us.

    • Thanks. I wasn’t tweeting b/c I didn’t want to overwhelm people. Glad you enjoyed them.

  8. I was crying this morning too. The rational part of my brain, however, is reminding me that there is a group of long-term fans which he should be grateful to. Those people who found him first, and actually did something about it – created sites, contacted BBC etc. – did make a difference. But it’s quite remarkable that he seems to remember it.

    • I guess it’s remarkable in the sense that not every actor would think that, but Armitage has been consistent in his appreciation for his fans and in remembering to thank them at every turn.

  9. Godo to know that he is enjoying this red carpet. I am sure it was a long road and A LOT of work. Can’t wait to see the movie. My heart stops a bit when I see the commericals on TV. It is nice to be able to talk about him and now people actually know who I am referring too! Very exciting. It is like your team winning the super bowl .

    • I haven’t raised him specifically with many people, but it’s fascinating how many people see my Thorin figure or the copy of The Annotated Hobbit on my desk and have something to say.

  10. To know he did the letter before he did the walk makes that stroll down that red carpet, in retrospect, even more delightful. And for him to be as glowingly happy after writing about his nerves and excitement, well, there you go.

And then reading from all who were there about how lovely he was tells me the man we all admire is as solid as they come.
