Goodbye, Volker. You held on a long time — a year longer than expected, long enough to witness a grandchild’s baptism, and your own fiftieth wedding anniversary — and long enough for everyone to say goodbye. Long enough for a last communion in the circle of your children on Maundy Thursday. It’s hard to say anything now that you yourself wouldn’t have called hopelessly sentimental or exaggerated, with your north German mien. Even so. Perhaps it’s best simply to thank G-d that I was privileged to know you, that my encounters with you, as quotidian as they often were, were quietly life-changing. You always were what you were, and that lesson alone has been quietly inspiring.

Now, perhaps, I’ll be able to tell people the story of how finally, after something like nine years, offered me the “Du.”

Ich habe einen guten Kampf gekämpft, ich habe den Lauf vollendet, ich habe Glauben gehalten;
