  1. Yeah, he sounded really American there. Makes me happy to hear it.
And the movie looked pretty good too.

  3. I noticed that, too. LOL! And I agree. He sounds American, but not distinctly Oklahoman (is that the word?).

    • I had two worries about the film, one of which was the accent, so this left me feeling very good.

    • Yes, much better than I feared. I can’t imagine that a disaster movie in the summertime won’t do well. Here’s hoping.

  5. Pretty powerful…he sounds so strange without the english accent….and there’s more yelling 🙂 I’ll have to give it a closer listen later tonight. Tks for sharing…nice surprise after a hard day.

    • I agree. A lot of British actors have that effect though where the pitch of their voice goes up when they are doing a US accent.

      Hang in there!

  6. Very tense, a lot of shouting. I do hope he gets to do more in the film than bark orders and hold onto things for dear life.

The accent is sounding good, though, which is such a relief. You’re right about “orderly.” Two rs. I bet he really worked on that one.

    • It’s a sound I pay a lot of attention to because it’s one of the hardest ones, apparently. (I have huge problems with it, too)

  7. I don’t normally like to listen to British actor without the British accent, but I think I will be ok this time around.

  8. There are lots of British actors who do a fabulous job at American accents. Think of Hugh Laurie for instance. I hope Mr Armitage has nailed it, I’m sure he would have had lots of coaching for it and practised heaps.
    My kids like the trailer.

    • This kind of suggests he hasn’t “nailed it,” but it sounds good enough that we can believe he’s American.

Fwiw, American regional accents can be hard even for Americans to master.

      • To be completely fair to Richard, it’s possible he wasn’t instructed to attempt the accent of a particular region. There’s this notion, reinforced by American t.v., that all Americans except Texans and New Yorkers speak with the same sort of nondescript regionless Middle-America-Heartland accent and there’s no variation. Except in comedy, where an accent played for cheap laughs because hahahaha if you don’t sound homogeneous you must be a hick or undesirable in some other way.

        • I thought either he or Garner said that he was doing Oklahoma. I’d have to go back to Frenz’s interview to look, though. That said, the regional accents aren’t as strong as they used to be, either.

          • They’re not, it’s true. And there’s so much transplantation that you don’t get them all that often even in regions where they are still strong.

Like, there is definitely an Arizona accent/ dialect, there really is, but ask anyone outside of Arizona about it and they’d probably either be incredulous or assume we sound like Texans. (See: the dumbass movie Raising Arizona in which they completely blow this.) My dad has it. Most native Arizonans of his generation have it, but that isn’t saying much because no one who lives here is from here. “Where are you from” is a standard getting-to-know-you question around here because the answer is never, ever Arizona. When you hear the accent, it definitely sticks out because it’s not common.

      • Agreed, what he is doing is close enough for jazz.
Oklahoma accent is not exactly Texas, or Deep South, or Midwestern…. so it would require some work (I would think) for anyone to pull off. Just like I have no clue about the many Brit dialects I hear discussed…. e.g. Hampshire vs. Yorkshire…? I know that’s South vs. North but wouldn’t be able to distinguish a good accent from a bad one- but am sure all Brits could.
