I’m not sure if it’s b/c we’ve really only heard him screaming as Gary so far, but this voice doesn’t seem as deep as his natural one.

I think this is a natural effect of trying to do the American accent; it sounds nasal to British ears, so they push that nasality and it means a slightly higher pitch. The other thing is that we haven’t really heard Armitage’s “natural” pitch in a film for years — Thorin is much deeper than normal and so is Proctor, from what we’ve heard.

It’s the science of sound formation. As one of my earliest choir directors had written on a giant poster spanning the entire length of the rehearsal room, “the vowel is the tone.” The shape you put mouth, lips, tongue, soft palate, and throat into when speaking/ singing dictates the tone that comes out. Lower, fuller tones require raising the soft palate and opening the throat (which is why choir directors and singing coaches are forever telling you to open your mouth more and stop dropping your chin.) American vowels require a narrower, flatter opening and placement than Richard’s natural accent. This makes his voice come out higher and less resonant. The vowel is the tone.

I knew Richard is supposed to be a Dad in this movie , but hearing that grown up boy call him Dad …. I don’t think I liked it 🙂

it’s very strange — although I didn’t have that feeling about Lexie in Strike Back at all. I wonder if it has something to do with them being boys?

I find it very hard to digest that American accent. No offense to America – it’s like watching a dubbed version of N&S, and hearing RA “speak” German. Just doesn’t sound right.

As far as accents are concerned, here in Italy the movie will be released with the most unnatural and absurd dubbing ever heard for Richard’s voice; better an accent that may sound weird than this, which is outrageous. http://youtu.be/yT8SgLbTXmE

I don’t speak Italian but I didn’t care for the voice at all. Couldn’t they have gotten someone who sounded more like him? Can you see it in English anywhere?

Why have they used that voice? Who knows. The only decent Italian dubbing I’ve heard was Thornton’s the rest terrible. I would be lucky if I find a cinema for the last Hobbit in original version, I don’t think this movie will be released in it.
