No cutesy Latin title 7 + a few fanfic and reminder of new blog links
Last installment here.
OT, collateral attractions, and things I think about
- With apologies to Charles Dickens, we need a new Christmas Story (from a fellow Armitage fan).
- The secret world of London’s sock club.
- Moosewood Cookbook turns 40. For me, as probably for many like me, these cookbooks were the initial introduction to vegetarian cooking. A Moosewood Cookbook taught me to put fresh mint into a yogurt carrot soup, something I still do.
- The original version of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s memoirs with scholarly notes is now available (the basis for the Little House books, it was thought too brutal for publication).
- Trauma lives us. This is part of a series written in response to the problem of whether university courses should have “trigger warnings” to protect students from content that may trouble them, but it has a lot of relevance to fandom, as well.
- On being an academic fan, including an interpretation of one of the scenes from film that will stick with me forever:
Captain Kirk’sMr. Spock’s death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. - Wendell Berry on the shoddy work of despair.
- In the wake of Benedict Cumberbatch’s obnoxious remarks about Sherlock’s skills as a lover, an informal survey on whether fangirls want to bang Sherlock.
- “The Sixth Stage of Grief is Retro-Computing,” on the things we do when we experience grief. Also about computer nostalgia, something dad and I experienced a lot of this summer.
- On the politics of being friends with a BNF.
- Einstein’s advice to Marie Curie on dealing with her critics.
- Are you a chaos or an order muppet?
- China bans puns.
- On praying anyway.
- Fandom isn’t friendship (references allegations against Bill Cosby).
Fanfic links
Over the years I’ve learned that my tastes in fanfic are apparently much broader than the average reader’s, so please make sure you read all the warnings before starting a story. But it’s been one of my greater pleasures this fall, often at lunch, to see when the new installment of one of the stories I follow has posted.
- “The Bunny Saga” by alkjira. Fluffy Bagginshield. What happens when Erebor is overrun by bunnies.
- “Suitcases and Tealeaves” by Berunien. Plotty Bagginshield with some smut. Bilbo has a teahouse and some dwarves come to town and bring their baggage with them. WIP.
- “Disparity” by Julia Daniels. North & South time travel. I haven’t finished this one yet.
- “Iron and Oak short stories” by CarlyQ. These are sweet one shots related to her longer story, Iron and Oak, about Thorin Oakenshield and an OFC.
- “Cherished Treasure,” by rubydoe. Bagginshield. Thorin Oakenshield’s long-lost daughter pops up in Erebor.
- “A Remover of Obstacles,” by MistakenMagic. Bagginshield. Thorin and Bilbo meet in a hospital for injured veterans. I may have recommended this before.
- “Smaug the Terrible … Hamster,” by alkjira. Title should be self-explanatory.
- “To Everything there is a Season,” by badskippy. Fluffy Bagginshield with plenty of my favorite hurt / comfort stuff going on.
- “Now that the chips are down,” by SailorFish. Bagginshield. Lots of references to violence. Slavefic AU.
- “How is this even my life?” by MsSpyder. RPF, Richard Armitage + OFC.
- “No Ordinary Love,” by badskippy. Bagginshield. Soppy as heck.
- “The Hardship of Courtships in the Bagginshield Ship,” again by alkjira. This is a send-up of generic conventions in explicit Bagginshield fanfic. DO NOT read this unless you don’t mind gross jokes about slash fanfic.
- Last but not least: Don’t miss Armitage Authors Network’s list of favorite Thorin fanfic.
And, a reminder
Although I assume you have seen these links here already, or elsewhere, please check out and follow the crop of Richard Armitage blogs (and blogs that have Armitage as a regular topic) that appeared during the summer. Gen 5? I’m losing track.
The things that keep a blogger writing? Lots of comments, interactions, likes, and page views.
In no particular order, keep your eyes on:
I’m the first commenter! That never happens! Anyway, I want to second your recommendation for alkjira. Coincidentally I just discovered her stories this evening and find them very entertaining. Thanks for the other links, Serv, I’m always on the lookout for new fanfic. Happy New Year!

lol — well Mazel Tov! I have an author subscription to alkjira now. There was also a Chanukkah fanfic (Ori / Kili, I think).

I finally changed my desktop from Thorin to a sea turtle today. I’m happy you’re still enjoying my shorts, so much better than eating them. Did I just channel Bart Simpson there for a second? Thanks Serv!

Thanks. I thought that was an interesting one, too, and it was easier to think about the problem w/r/t Cosby, whom I have watched over the years but whom I’ve never been a particular fan of.

Oops, I have to apologize, because that was a different PTSD story. Nonetheless, I am jazzed every time I see your story appear in my mail — you write SO convincingly about the trauma themes that fascinate me, and about their friendship / love for each other.

I was a little confused, but not to worry, reading about your experiences and thoughts on desire was very interesting. I’m pleased you like the way I’m handling the trauma themes: Obstacles-Thorin and I have a few things in common, but there are still many things beyond my personal experience, so I’m doing my best to handle his story with care and sensitivity, and to keep it as true to reality as possible. Thank you so much for taking the time to read the fic, and I hope to get Chapter 12 to you in a week or so!

And thank you again, Servetus, I honestly didn’t expect to get any kind of shout-out for this story, so I really appreciate you linking it on your blog!

Thank you! Not a whole lot of Bagginshield this time, but it’s a part of Thorin’s healing process that needed to happen. However, there will be a lot of Bilbo next chapter, and I am very excited about the sheer amount of fluff it will bring 😉

I’m not hardcore Bagginshield, I am hardcore hurt/comfort, and I loved the way these conversations between Thorin and Dis were written although I found Gandalf’s strategy to force the conversation slightly less plausible. And all the Durin family love at the end — perfect!

Verspäteten Dank für die Lese-Tipps, besonders die Fanfics.. 🙂
Smaug the Terrible … Hamster brachte das eine oder andere Schmunzeln auf mein Gesicht; The Hardship of Courtship … ließ mich sogar laut lachen.

Wow, great chapter! I would say Arendt uses both intentionalist (Nazis always wanted to kill Jews, even if not all Nazis were rabid about it) and functionalist (the needs of the program determined its ultimate shape) features in explaining the Holocaust, but on the whole, is more of a functionalist.

That was a super evil plot turn, but the idea of Thorin reading Eichmann in Jerusalem while sitting behind the door close to Bilbo — that is just such a beautiful, beautiful picture. Thank you for that.

Hello! I’m so sorry I never replied to your last few comments, but it honestly does mean the world to me that you’re still reading ‘Obstacles’. I do really appreciate your loyalty and I’m so glad you’re enjoying this evil plot turn. Your comments have definitely influenced and inspired a few lines in recent chapters, so thank you again for reading and I hope you’re having a lovely weekend 🙂
P.S. I thought it was about time Thorin used his words, that scene was so much fun to write, even if it was also painful!

Somehow I don’t think I’d pick the last ten pages of Eichmann in Jerusalem as bedtime reading 🙂 but this was another sweet chapter. Looking forward to seeing how Bilbo and Thorin work out this new phase in their relationship and if Thorin’s release accelerates Bilbo’s move toward independence in any way.

Hello there! It’s wonderful to hear from you again – and please don’t worry about not leaving a comment, I’m only sorry I haven’t replied for so long! Many apologies for the tears hands over tissues, but I promise you’ve just survived the last bit of proper angst before the fic comes to an end.
Thanks so much for spotting that tulip issue! I was looking at flower seeds on various websites based on the flowers’ meanings (just to add another layer of symbolism y’know) and I didn’t realise the tulip seeds I was looking at wouldn’t bloom for a good few years – which is why people usually go for tulip bulbs instead of seeds. I’m sure Sam wouldn’t want Bilbo to wait that long for them to flower, so I’m just searching for a replacement 😉
Any suggestions are most welcome!

I really don’t want it to end! Not sure what I’ll do when I can’t be anticipating what will happen next. Maybe you can write a “Fili goes to uni” fic with strong supporting performances from Thorin and Bilbo!
re: flowers — no idea. Tbh we buy all the ones we put in as seedlings to avoid the whole pain in the ass seeding process.
