Richard Armitage and spy story tropes #5 — the security check

It looks like the U.S. Embassy in Berlin has a standard x-ray security check, but with neat green flashing lights.

Later, Valerie (Michelle Forbes) lets Daniel into a more secure area of the embassy, presumably “the station.” She has a swipe card, though. Not as cool as the Spooks situation, in my opinion.

You have to do this to get onto the grid, too. However, the Grid had these really cool pod thingies — but as I learned tonight, they were repositioned after series 6. So I never saw Lucas go through the pods. Though the character’s backstory suggests that he would have.

This is what the pods looked like, and you know if you watched the first six series of Spooks that they occasionally provided moments of humor, as when they malfunctioned.

Ruth (Nicola X), Adam (Rupert Penry-Jones) and Zaf (Raza Jaffrey) enter the Grid through the pods.

But I went back and looked to see how Lucas North entered the Grid in series 7, and it was a sliding door mechanism. It’s a cute moment; Lucas seems to be observing Adam to see what he will do.

Lucas North (Richard Armitage) and Adam (Rupert Penry-Jones) enter the Grid in Spooks 7.1.

So which is better, the American Embassy entrance? The key card entrance? The “old” Grid entrance? The “new” Grid entrance?

  1. This has kept me busy all morning. I love the interactive “stuff”👍

  2. Everyone has its charm XD

  3. the card system is so old fashioned and not that safe 🙂 no wonder they have leaks and moles 😉 i quite like the pod versions, makes it more secretive and fun to watch 🙂

  4. it does seem a little antiquated.

    • That’s what I thought too! Especially nowadays when they can use hand or fingerprint scans or even scan one’s irises! I’m fascinated by all that stuff. Yeah – have to admit I loved the pods too particularly the “swishy” sound they made when they opened or closed. I keep thinking of Ros saying to Connie, “Step away from the pods!!”
