You’ve probably seen too many pictures of Richard Armitage today

So I’m doing a dump of what appeared overnight because I know you are sick of looking at him.

    Love his new look.
Is it my imagination or he stayed away from Mishka Forbes yesterday? No one common photo , or I missed them .

          • Someone on FB said MF is more famous than Richard in America. Is it really so? And is it true he is not well known in America?

            • It’s true he is not well known in the US. I don’t think she’s more famous than he is. She’s never done a major blockbuster film series like The Hobbit. It probably depends a little bit on whether you’re watching films or not. I also tend not to watch the kind of TV she’s in, either. The last time I saw her on the TV screen regularly was the 1990s (Star Trek), but she has been in True Blood. I don’t know anyone who watches that but I know it was popular among younger audiences.

As I said elsewhere, I think EPIX has done pretty well so far with not rushing things — they must have some information that suggests to them that now is the time. Jocelyn Diaz was a former HBO executive, so I think she must know what she is doing. And they’ve got Sunday night at 9 / 8 — this is a really good time slot as it gets the bump from the American football games that are ending at that time.

In other words — I think the general factors are as the article states (“peak tv,” and so on). I also think EPIX is doing what it can to try to alleviate them. The rest remains to be seen.

                • The other thing I should mention is that most fans seems to be looking for some ‘big breakthrough’ kind of situation. That is a pattern in this fandom, i.e., “this is the project that will make him super famous.” I’ve never been convinced that is how he sees his own career, and neither am I convinced it would be desirable for him. If this series turns out to be great tv, even if audiences don’t see it, people who make tv will see it. (Akin to Hannibal — the reason for doing it isn’t the audience.) It can always lead to the next thing and that is what most actors are looking for — what is the next thing going to be?

                  Like

                  • I think we as his fans just wish him the most successful career. And the success in this industry includes fame and recognition , recognition not only from the critics but from the audience too. Although the opinion of the audience and critics can not coincide. Don’t know what he is looking for. As ambitious guy he should seek for the both, no?

                    Like

                    • I don’t know, because fame and recognition are complex categories and not absolute. I think he’s already demonstrated that there are certain kinds of recognition he’s not seeking (darling of the gossip magazines or boulevard press, for instance). I think I’ve told you that I suspect he would struggle with the sort of fame like the kind that Bond would bring him. I don’t know if he’s actively been considered for that role, or if you are offered that role, you can really turn it down, but I suspect it would be a harder decision from his perspective than it seems from ours.

I also think we can’t generalize about what fans want. In my experience, in the first place, most fans want for him to a project they would like, and in second place, if they think a little bit more, they want for him what they would want for themselves if they were in what they understand to be his situation. In my own case I hope he is doing work he wants to be doing and that he’s happy — i.e., I want him to be fulfilled. But those are my own personal goals and I might define those things quite differently than he would. He said once that his Arkenstone was “respect.” Even that is hard to define. The respect of London theater critics is quite a different thing than the respect of Hollywood studio heads and the path to either of those is quite different. I’ve never had the feeling that he’s been inflexible about his professional goals, and obviously on a professional level those two things might be related, as doing a blockbuster might give one the money to be able to do a poorly paid but highly respected play. Obviously if he puts in the effort he wants what he does to be successful — but he doesn’t have infinite possibilities (some roles are not offered, presumably), and I don’t know that his notion of success is all that rigidly defined.

Yes, I remember what you’ve said about Bond. I thought you meant that he would struggle with the attention of the Bond franchise fans (who can be not his fans, and would like or dislike his Bond and been indifferent to his other performances and him). But every big project would potentially bring attention of the fans and mass media to an actor . I wonder if he really can decline the role in a blockbuster only because he does not want such huge attention. At least he survived after the Hobbit 🙂
I suppose The Hobbit gave him opportunity to do The Crucible. I remember he said in one of the interviews that after not successful theater experience right after the drama school he decided to make a name on TV and then come back to the theater, because the theatres offer the roles to the famous actors. I think there is a sort of balance he keeps – between doing what he likes and doing he does not really like but what gives him opportunity to do what he likes (as you’ve said). Wish him success with all his projects every of which he likes to do (humbly and we do like too).

                    • re: Bond vs Hobbit — the two franchises are not really comparable. There are probably 20 times as many people interested in Bond as in The Hobbit, worldwide. A lot more people are casually interested in Bond. I personally don’t think he’s being seriously considered, although I know that many fans disagree with me. Concretely re: Bond — right now he’s not at all in the focus of the fame industry. They photograph him when he is on duty for official events and only very rarely other than that. Considering the amount of flying he does, he’s more or less being ignored by photographers who take airport pictures (for instance) and we almost have to consider those sightings, when they occur, to be accidental. If he played Bond, whether or not fans loved it, he would be much more regularly looked for / followed because whether he liked it or not, there would now be an audience of people beyond us who were interested in his moves. He is friends with Orlando Bloom, so he must at least have an idea of what it is like to live that way.

I think it would be hard to turn down. But I’m sure he could, if it wasn’t what he wanted to be doing.

                • I forgot about Hunger Games. However, most people I know didn’t see them, whereas everyone I know saw the first Hobbit film. She’s not getting top billing in the US press, which suggests that the marketers don’t think she’s the selling point.

        • My guess would have been that the group photo op is done on the way into the party, but who knows. The only pics of him in the background of the party are earlier — it’s still sunny outside — while there are pics on the Michelle Forbes account from sunset or after.

      • You know, it’s occurred to me that maybe (but only maybe) the reason he isn’t in the photos she posted is because he’s the one who took them. Or maybe he did leave early.

I have realised that it seems the only tweets either of them have posted mentioning the other have been work related. None of the friendly banter like when they were still in Berlin filming.

  17. Ode To Too Many pics

How many pics are ever enough,
When we can admire such beautiful stuff?
    We try to be strong,
    And not look too long.
    But with photos like these,
    Give a warning, please.
    Smile, beard, eyes and hair,
May cause the viewer to stop and stare.
    Time flies by,
    Our eyes become dry.
    As we risk the pain,
    Of itchy eye strain.
But many ladies may freely admit,
Ogling Richard is always worth it.
