My impression is there’s a big “audience at home” for these things.

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who was amused by the “sippy” cup. 🙂

How sweet to take a photo of the security guards! I do always think that they must feel so ignored when all the women throw themselves at RA at SD. Or maybe they think “Rather you than me, dude!”?! It must be kinda scary to have a whole flock of swooning females running towards you. If I were RA, I’d run for it!! 😂

I didn’t have that impression in London — they got a lot of attention from fans, too. But then I also never saw anyone throw herself or run toward Armitage.

These two have been very nice at the shows I’ve been to. Their focus seems to be more general crowd control than tailing Richard. The crowds have been tame overall, but I did witness one woman next to me go way over the line with Richard: she wanted her friend to take her picture with him and decided he wasn’t standing close enough, so she – yes, really – grabbed the front of his coat with both hands, “reeled” him in, and held him there. My jaw fell. Richard was not amused; he went a bit stone-faced and his body stiffened, and in one short burst he pulled away from her (but said nothing and continued with the photo). The security guys were nowhere near him when this happened. It did make me realize more pointedly that it’s not always fun being him!

I am not saying no one ever does anything problematic. I’m just saying that unless it is very different than London, it’s not the case that he steps out the door and a horde of fans run at him.

Sorry to be a pedant, but I think as fans we should consider how much we really want to reinforce stereotypes that are mostly questionable in the first place. The vast majority of fans I saw in London, by which I mean 99 percent, behaved with absolutely acceptable decorum. This doesn’t mean that there are no people who mess that up, and that is unfortunate, but it is not the rank and file of fans who stand there every night.

I agree with you, and started by saying I thought people were behaving just fine. I was simply sharing an anecdote of a moment when the guards might have been helpful but were nowhere to be found.
