  1. You know what I’m really enjoying lately? The fact that so many people are getting to meet, and get to know each other. I also feel somehow proud that even those in different “cliques”, who may argue. .. seem to be able to come together over LOL & B.S. for the purposes of liking, or tweeting about them.

    • If that’s true (I don’t think it is), it’s certainly laudable.

    • To clarify — a lot of these meetups are being organized via a FB group or privately, so participants are self-selectors. I know that there are fans I would never want to meet in person myself and there is no way that I would want to see this play with them. Of course, I am extrapolating from my own experience. Maybe everyone’s forgetting all their differences. But I think the likeminded are meeting up with the likeminded.

      • Liking a tweet and sharing a meal are two different things. I don’t know that we’re all that good lol.

        • I know I’m not. In particular for me this costs me money, not more than I can afford, but more than I spend casually, and I want to avoid unpleasantness. I’m sure others do, too.

          • Does anyone know who you are, that they would recognize you, outside the couple I know about?

            • Guilty and Babette?

            • the people who threatened to doxx me in 2013 and found old photos of me, for starters. And there are a few other people who I would recognize and wouldn’t want to see there. I don’t really subscribe to the idea that the fandom is a friendly place. I have found some nice friends, and I’m delighted to see people getting their wishes and experiencing a happy fandom, of course.

              • Unfortunate that there is such an undercurrent of high school bitchiness that goes on. Sorry you go through this, when you should just be allowed to enjoy. Maybe Richard will lend you his cap, and some of his many sunglasses.

                • I experience the fandom as a mix between really nice, helpful and friendly people, and then those who are aggressive, self-righteous, derogatory… The latter came as a nasty surprise after being welcomed very warmly by the first. I’ve also seen some really nice people withdraw due to the latter. (The solution seems to be communicating in private with a select few.) It’s a real shame.

                  • I know what you mean. So far, I’ve been treated great by all. The only exception has been when I have joined in arguments, and have seen a little turn, that seems to revert afterwards. The thing is, I know how nasty it can be, and quite often is towards others. I am a very even tempered, keep it all in person, which is bad, so I am going along at this point. I don’t know how long that will last because it leaves me feeling dishonest some days. I don’t approve of the way I know people I feel close to are treated. I also feel like due to my associations, which are right out there to see, it will turn on me eventually. In a perfect world, we would all just enjoy exchanging experiences, thoughts, information… about Richard. It’s not.

                    • I think you’re safe as long as you don’t take sides.

Part of the issue here is that some of us have very, very long histories. Arguments or statements that seem to attract a disproportionate amount of anger are really reflections of long-standing conflicts, which isn’t necessarily obvious if you don’t know the people involved well. And I think the problem is that for those who have a long history — well, we do have opinions about things that have expressed, and certain kinds of conversations are increasingly annoying.

                  • I find fandom social media really different my IRL social media, but I think it has to do with the need in fandom to communicate with total strangers, which I don’t do IRL. I have a fairly strong rule that I don’t argue with strangers — but that is the situation I’m constantly in in fandom.
