How did it get to be the first Sunday in Advent already?

Here’s Gardiner conducting BWV 140. People say of him when he plays Bach that he’s in a hurry. (Or: that he plays Bach like he’s at a dance.) At the moment it seems to be appropriate to my mood …

Maybe the appropriate mood will descend this week.

If you would like a Richard Armitage connection, the cantata above is said to have been an influence on Procol Harum’s most well known song “A Whiter Shade of Pale” (1967); Kenneth in Love, Love, Love refers to the band in Act Two.

    • This is the only Procol Harum song I knew until putting together the play’s playlist sent me on a trip through youtube. Fandom is so educational 🙂

  6. We are participants of the christmas market in our town ( we have a booth for home made jam )and this year the visitors were more in the mood for the pre- christmas period. We have spent a good first weekend in Advent. However it is a strange feeling to be under the protection of the gendarmerie after the assassinations

    • I’m glad there’s more pre-Xmas cheer out and abroad, we will need it.

And yes — how weird that must feel. I can only imagine.

  9. OMG, this literally brought tears to me eyes, it’s very personal for me. This was one of my father’s absolute favorite Bach cantatas (Bach was his fave composer). The “Mein Freund ist mein und ich bin sein” part was the theme my dad used when he officiated my wedding 17 years ago. The first choral part was played at his funeral….
