My guess is that the work involved in keeping the boards that were not dead safe for users and in compliance with copyright law was becoming more expensive than whatever revenue they were generating. But it’s just a guess.

Venues have started to disable unmoderated comments sections bit by bit … they are horrible to read and the medium is a bit dated anyway.
