Happy Paddy’s Day greetings from Ireland. It’s just dawning here, and as tradition demands, it is blustery and we have heavy rains forecast. I guess I’ll be watching the parade on TV then… Slรกn!

I’ve heard it’s less [cough] raucous in Ireland than here. However, the weather here will definitely put a damper on some of the festivities, I think.

๐ “raucous” is a polite way of describing it… I am sure the Irish are unmatched when it comes to individual contributions to Paddy’s Day. The parade, however, is another kettle of fish. Or pint of Guinness, so to speak…

It’s changed here, too. When I was a kid everyone tried to wear green (“Everybody’s Irish on St Patrick’s Day”) and college kids got really drunk. Parades in big cities. But I felt like the big celebrations used to be reserved for people who are ethnically Irish. Now there’s a parade everywhere, all kinds of little girls dancing in green skirts, the rivers get died green, all the restaurants have corned beef and cabbage on the menu, there are drink specias everywhere, and the drinking is (even by my relatively relaxed standards) out of hand. Or maybe it’s just that it’s Friday coinciding with the holiday this year so there’s plenty of excuse for license.

right now it’s kind of just to see if I can do it, but it’s a fictionalized version of an argument my grandmothers had over something happening in one of their gardens.

Did you have corned beef? The local diocese here gave a dispensation to Catholics to eat corned beef today, in return for a different charitable act. Otherwise it would be fish, fish, fish.

No ๐ first dispensation is on the 25th and then for fish. Orthodox are v strict! I honestly couldn’t keep it all the correct way. I wouldn’t be allowed even oil. I’m sticking to two days a week Wed and Fridays free of animal products. I broke lent today however at evening dinner because i had rhe rest of mozzarella from my friends plate and the mushroom pasta had some cream. Affogato had a bit of italian icecream with milk but no egg. So i sinned with dairy which i always my downfall but we were celebrating both my friends being on road to recovery which was great reason to be a tiny bit naughty. Also i was much more bothered about a piece of special burrara going to the bin than me being 1 lent day not as strict about dairy. I can’t stand the idea of wasting all the work that went into it on a personal whim. Not the spirit if it ๐ i think HE knows how grateful i am for own health and everyone else’s around me and for things mending when it could have been so bad. And there was dark chocolate and books for the St P celebrated one. No booze for a change, guess a very un-traditional but nevertheless heartly felt celebration.
And i the process I’ve learned that surprisingly i find milk much harder to give up than cheese and that i would not be able to do milk alternatives long term. That surprised me. I guess black tea with milk really is in my blood now and nothing less than the real deal will do. Strange
