Richard Armitage drowns my cheatin’ heart

I’m not actively looking (except tongue-in-cheek), but I occasionally — rarely — see someone I might cheat with. If Aidan Turner’s off the table, do I need a substitute?

Just lately I’ve been watching Killing Eve on BBCA. It’s the story of Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh), who becomes the target of Villanelle, a killer-for-hire (Jamie Comer) — which gives Eve the opportunity to leave her desk jockey role at MI-5 and move actively into the field, something she’s always wanted to do. Normally I don’t watch this kind of thing, and I admit that the brutality bothers me, but for some reason the show totally hits my funnybone, probably because of Oh’s everywoman bumbling relatability and to some extent because Villanelle is just so absurd.

In the first episode, we meet Eve’s husband, Niko (Owen McDonnell), a total softie, a crunchy teacher who’s definitely in the weaker position in the relationship. He loves her more than she loves him, and she’s bored at work and at home. As Eve initiaties her transformation into Gemma Bond, tensions erupt, and one of the reasons I like this show is how well their arguments have been scripted. But in any case, I looked at him, and thought, huh, that’s more like the type of guy I usually go out with, and he’s very nice looking in an everyman sort of way.

So, I did an Internet search, naturally, and came up on his wikipedia entry, which specified his other work. The only piece of it I knew I’d seen was Spooks 8.3. But I’d forgotten which one Vadim Robinov (McDonnell’s role) was.

You probably haven’t. It turns out that Robinov was the Russian oligarch that Lucas almost drowns in order to try to pry information from him.

You probably remember the scene because Lucas gets so deliciously wet.

Or certain parts of him, anyway. Richard Armitage is on the left.

There seemed to be some kind of lesson here. I try to cheat — with someone who Lucas North beat up almost a decade ago. There’s probably no future in this crush.

Too bad, I do like longish hair and cheesy mustaches. But if Lucas is willing to stand up for me so actively, I definitely have to stay true.

  1. Love this. By chance, I came across Killing Eve because of all the royalty shows airing on BBC America right now. I have my DVR set to record all the episodes over the weekend.

I have a crush on Kevin Love, who plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers. There is a lot of basketball watching in this house and I get notified when he gets some airtime. I see some RA similarities in him.

    • Someone said something a few days about encountering a waiter that looked very similar to him and having to restrain herself from photographing him because she could never have explained. I saw someone in the local paper, an elementary school teacher, who had that look, too, and thought … hmmm, is he in range? Unfortunately he’s 15 years younger and married.

  2. I’m relieved to read this… resolution! 😀😁😀 😉

  3. hahahaha “There’s probably no future in this crush.” Love it, Serv. And yes, resistance – or re-orientation – is futile. Nice try, though.

  4. Haha! Nice try 😉 You might like Dougray Scott… he just been starring as the baddie in a BBC adaptation of The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins.

  5. He looks scruffy and sweet! I’m looking at, admiring, and yes, even loving others all the time but no one can quite reach the heights of Richard-love… So yeah, I feel you. As others have also said: nice try, though! 🙂
