  1. I call manip

    • seriously looks like he’s just pasted on top of the mirror. My main reaction: he’s so gorgeous, WHY do this to him? If it’s a fan it’s one thing but a professional photographer? It defies belief.

  2. Haben diese Box-Handschuhe irgendeine schlimme Krankheit? Sieht böse nach Geschwüren aus 😂 Für mich ganz klar eine Manipulation……

    • Guylty says no but if this is real … I do not even know what to say. Disastrous image.

      • Ich weiß. Widerspreche ihr ungern, aber das Werk überzeugt mich tatsächlich nicht. Aber schön, dass wir darüber geredet haben…. 😆

        • I think it might be an example of something Armitage used to say more often, which is that maybe you don’t want to know too much. To me this really detracts from my memories of his portrayal of Proctor — cheapens it. Ah well. Nice to chat with you, too 🙂

  3. I don’t understand how this pose and props fit the Crucible image, even if it was a behind the scene photo. Did John Proctor box? Maybe that’s why I’m so skeptical with this image.

    • Yeah — in the missing fifth act of the play, instead of going to the gallows Proctor challenges Salem to a boxing match while the theme from Rocky plays in the badkground.

  5. Just pointing to the hashtags in the original IG post, particularly “The Half” – the photographer’s artistic project where he is photographing actors the half hour before they go on stage. The rituals they might engage in to get themselves into the mood. If you look at simonannand.com there are links to a couple of clips about the project. The accompanying book is already available. Annand himself is an industry veteran with quite an impressive list of clients. Personally I cannot believe that he would risk reputation by putting out manips.

    • I guess you know better. To me this is a really poor choice both for Armitage and the photographer. I think if Armitage is channelling Rocky behind the scenes this is something I do not want to know about him.

  6. I thought it was funny, fighting theatrical evil with his Boxing gloves. I don’t know if it is legit or not, but it’s an interesting image of a gentleman actor impersonating a tough guy.

    • It’s so weird, b/c Proctor was a tough guy all on his own. I guess it might be funny. I saw the image and was first shocked and then revolted.

      • I wasn’t thinking of Proctor, who was a super tough dude. I was thinking of RL RA the lovely gentleman, impersonating a tough boxer. It struck me as funny because that is not the image he generally projects. I doubt he could punch his way out of a paper bag. Not that he is too weak, it just seems unlikely he’d use his fists to get into character. Could be totally off base on this. All I remember about his show prep was listening to music and taking a bunch of concoctions for his throat. I think we’d remember if he said he put on boxing gloves and threw a few punches.

        • Maybe he was taking out aggression about someone else. What stuck in my mind about the prep was having to rehearse barefoot and also being put in stress positions with Samantha Colley on his back.

  7. I checked out Guylty’s links, so I guess it’s legit, but no other actor is depicted with props that wouldn’t be used to actually prepare. Most of them are putting on make-up, combing their hair, relaxing or just standing around. Actually getting ready. This is the only one of this nature in the videos or on the site. It’s also contrary to what the photographer says about the project. After everything Richard Armitage has said in interviews about preparing for his performance as Proctor, it’s hard to imagine how he’d be in the mindset 30 minutes before curtain to act out another character. Baffling.

    • I was thinking of part of it for me is that I have no positive associations with boxing at all — none, but I think you’ve hit on something more important is that this seems like gratuitous beefcake. My initial reaction was “this is like those Lee Preston on the sofa pictures,” but at least it was clear what those pictures were trying to express, i.e., Lee Preston is a skank. John Proctor is not a boxer. I don’t know if the association for Armitage would have been suppressed violence but it doesn’t come across to me at all.

      • I think it’s a terrible composition. The boxing gloves seem out of proportion – they’re a very old style and are as big as his head. No wonder this didn’t make it into the exhibition.

  12. Well well well. Lovely biceps, and that little hint of belly. Nice – weird, but nice. Proctor pops on stage after a day of hard work, right? Maybe he needed a little tiredness in his arms, and some boxing in the backstage seems more acceptable than shoveling a pile of manure. I don’t know anything about porn, but I think that a boxeur in a porn movie must look exactly like this. Sorry, my fault.

    • So in a boxer porn movie — is there more boxing, or more porn? And how does he touch the sexual partner with the gloves on? Just curious 🙂

  13. Just for some funny distraction and some sort of study!
How to stay grounded after seeing this photograph?
My solution would be to just take the time to read this article.
