Richard Armitage tangentially related
Current projects:
- (My Zoe): Lots of buzz in different places about the TIFF platform news release: Hollywood Reporter, Canadian National Post, Cineuropa, Focus Cinema. And even from Armitage.
- (The Stranger): Armitage wrapped. But while wrapping this last week, The Stranger filmed in Warrington. Lots of thanking still going on: Armitage / Dudman (with photo) and continued; Armitage / Priscilla John Casting; Armitage / Brandon Fellows; Armitage / Harlan Coben; Armitage / Neil Barnes; Armitage / Shaun Dooley.
- (Castlevania): UPROXX likes it. However, responses to Netflix’s Enter the Anime documentary are mainly negative (here’s one). A commentary on the potential for love in the third season.
- (The Lodge): See it premiere in Sydney, Australia. Think about it in the context of Hammer Horror.
- (Wolverine: The Lost Trail): Makes a list of recommended podcasts on the Daily Mail.
Past projects:
- (Pinter / PROUST): If you’ve always wanted to try Proust but have been afraid of the commitment, some new, shorter novellas have been rediscovered.
- (Ocean’s 8): Comment on movie aggregation and its woes, with the film as its starting point. At the time I was mildly sympathetic, but after some of my recent moving watching in comparison to RT reviews, I am starting to agree more with the point that Blanchett et al. were making.
Things Armitage has said:
Collateral attractions:
- David Hewson (Romeo & Juliet; Macbeth) urges would-be authors to think about audio.
- Alicia Silverstone (The Lodge) will be appearing in an adaptation of The Babysitters’Club.
- Interview with Graham McTavish (The Hobbit; Castlevania) mentions Armitage favorably.
- Adi Shankar (Castlevania) responds to Jim Carrey’s complaints about fan impact on the drawing of Sonic the Hedgehog.
- Sarah Paulson (Ocean’s 8) will appear as Linda Tripp in the third season of American Crime Story.
- Charlotte Kirk (Ocean’s 8) is said to be filming The Reckoning with another collateral attraction, Sean Pertwee (whom Armitage worked with in both Cold Feet and Cleopatra. More on the Charlotte Kirk backstory here. Meanwhile, the Ocean’s 8 marketer has been promoted.
Industry issues:
- How Netflix allots its budget.
- In Hollywood, actors may need scandal insurance.
- More on screen sex scenes.
Things we’ve talked about:
- The Amazon Tolkien series will not go past the second age (thus preventing the refilming of the Jackson oeuvre) and will be bound to existing canon.
- A calculator to determine how many more books per year you’d read if you opted out of social media.
- The motion smoothing we expect from TV is harming our cinema experience. This used to be a topic of greater interest in the fandom back when more of us were trying out hand at vidding. And in the days of the great frame debate.
- Instagram is again having issues with its memers and trying to paper them over.
Ah, McTavish is such a nice guy!

Yeah, and you can kind of tell he wasn’t expecting that question but he still came up with a great answer to it. (And his career is much bigger than Armitage’s at the moment.)

I think he did something Armitage was always reluctant to do — embrace a particular sort of typecasting. He’s big and frightening and Celtic and he’s gone with that. I don’t know if Armitage had more offers he turned down, but it seems like the “I want to do different things” line has harmed his career. He’s not known for anything (like Martin Freeman for playing Everyman, or BC for playing nerdy weirdos), whereas McTavish went along with that.

We talked about this before I think. I really, really would love to know more about projects that came his way (or not) and that he turned down.
But leaving RA aside, I am very happy for McTavish

I think we have (I know I’ve talked about it somewhere), and I’m happy for McTavish, too. Couldn’t happen to an (apparently) nicer guy.

Thank you for the summary. There are always things I miss, and the last two sections always provide extra interesting reading!
