  1. Our glorious country. the UK, which claims to be the 5th or 6th richest in the world- it is for the rich off – shore tax avoiders. but not for starving children . UNICEF is donating food to some parts of the UK and members of our totally useless and corrupt govt. are moaning about it, rather than ensuring people get fed.

On another note entirely, I noticed yesterday that RA is no longer attached to The Seville Communion. Given it looked like it was actually written with RA in mind( it wasn’t) in the lead character , Quart, I feel what a shame as if well done , and it has a good director and Oscar nominated cinematographer with good co-stars , and based on a very enjoyable book and to be filmed in Rome and Seville, it would have been RA ‘s biggest part since Thorin and possibly his best part since John Thornton . I am sure there may be good reasons , for whoever decided this, but Now and Then continues with Adrian Noble having dropped out as Director, based on a poor and dated book. while a good and not dated book is not being carried on. Words nearly fail me.

    • I saw the bit about UNICEF in the Guardian yesterday. I’d say “ouch” except I don’t think the US has covered itself in glory in this respect, either. Perhaps Boris Johnson et al will close the borders to all international agencies on Jan 1 or exit the UN as their next trick. I know our current lame duck president would if he could.

I haven’t been following the Seville Communion very closely. Maybe they didn’t find funding? Unfortunate for Armitage that Noble is no longer directing — I had supposed that was one reason he had wanted to participate. However, I suppose attracting Stephen Fry will raise the profile of the project somewhat.

      • The Seville Communion seems to be booked to be made in Feb next year and has a full cast ( except Quart!! the lead) and crew so I have no idea what will happen. But the virus. …. who knows??? Now and Then seems to be booked for filming in the autumn now. I think RA is doing a Harlan Coben series like the Stranger , this may be instead of the Seville Communion as all 3 seemed to be booked for the same time but now Now and Then has moved to the autumn. No announcement re The Seville Communion just RA ‘s name and part missing from the line up. Real shame if he has pulled out quite late if it was all ready to go and he will miss a really big good part. I know no more than that. I feel really disappointed with it all.

        • I imagine that everything about “Stay Close” looks like a better professional prospect (if not an artistic one) from his perspective (more money, more exposure, getting himself on Netflix’s regular schedule), so if that was going to conflict with Seville Communion, I imagine it wasn’t hard to make that choice. But who knows.

      • Mmmmh, at least the angst of ‘will he write this year?’ is gone that way

        • I was actually thinking about that yesterday — that there were years where I awaited that messaged with bated breath. To be fair to Armitage there is so much else going on right now for me that concern about him has to fit in a very small space. But it would have been nice to get a little more than “we’re all suffering, please donate.”

          • It would have been indeed. I guess I somehow have given up by now to expect much of him in this regard :/

            • Yeah. He’s so erratic. The other thing is I found myself thinking: really? After fans donated so much to LOROS this year? Not that he doesn’t have the right to ask, and not that there isn’t need, and not that some people won’t give anyway as they have the resources and are generally nice, but it feels either tone deaf or ill timed. LOROS got money from me twice this year; my Xmas charity is going to Wisconsin Books for Prisoners, and if there’s money to spare, to our local food bank.

              • I agree. He is obviously good at raising money for charities he cares about, worthwhile ones, money is pouring in but it would have been nice to have a little warm acknowledgement of the RA community, as well as directives towards mindfulness and giving (and we are not exactly stingy).

  3. Yes, that’s true. I hope he managed to do a midnight flit to see his dad after period of self-solation. It’s all such a stupid and depressing mess.
