There were two cardinals and several other birds there this morning

Five inches and counting. Dad’s nose is still out of joint about the plowing, but our guy’s already been and gone. It makes me feel so much safer.

  1. Is it still snowing by you? We start sometime after I when to bed at 10:30 pm on Wednesday with snow stopping about 4:00 pm Thursday. My husband thinks we got anywhere from 6 to 8 inches. School was in session all day and stopped just as I was leaving to go home. I am at the Primary school most the time and have my desk there but see students at the Intermediate school. I walked over, saw students and walked back in about 1 hour, the snow had covered my foots steps where you could not see them at all. The drive in was horrible, the plow trucks had not gotten out yet, we live off a main road. I get the town road we live on but even the city streets where mainly not plowed yet. Now here comes the cold weather.

    • I’m glad you’re safe. Roads were horrible here, too. Tons and tons of accidents, people in the ditch everywhere. It stopped about two hours ago. Now the wind is picking up. Tomorrow maybe a good day to defrost the freezer?

    • I think we got about six inches total.

      • My 2 oldest said they each got about 3-4 inches. One is 1 hour away and the other is 2 hours away. With this weather it would be great to defrost the freezer. I can’t due the chest freezer is in the unheated garage. With this weather nothing would defrost for me, unless I put a heater in the freezer. Then I would freeze anyway. Hope the cleaning when well.

  2. Wow. We just don’t see snow like that though we are going to get some Sunday, apparently. One inch and the whole country will grind to a halt 🙄 Stay warm and safe!

    • I hope you survive your snow! The lower half of the US is like that — paralyzed by snow and ice. We’re totally set up and ready for this even if most people aren’t thrilled by it. I don’t know why there are always so many accidents during the first huge snowstorm, though.

      • Amazingly, we got 6 inches too… very unusual. It’s still with us and my dog thinks it’s fabulous 🤣 We had to miss a hospital appointment because the roads were blocked but otherwise we are surviving 😊

        • Sorry to read that!

Six inches is my personal boundary for definitely staying at home. My car is fine in up to four inches, 4-6 is “go out if you really need to” and 6 is “stay home until someone shovels you out” territory.

  3. I didn’t know cardinal birds existed until recently – they look like cartoon birds! It must be great to see them.

    • They are little more orange than red, and they are not super common here, but our yard is a bit like a wildlife refuge. I saw some foxes the other morning, too. With the birds it’s frustrating because they are so close to our dining room window — essentially you have to sit there and sit still for a while and then they eventually come, but if anyone moves they disperse.

  4. We had lots of blue tits in our tree today. Slightly more muted than cardinals!

    • I think I’m out of my depth now, but I think that’s a kind of chickadee? I believe we have them here, but I’m not sure. The main bird in our yard is usually robins, but they don’t come for another six weeks or so, and they are pretty dull looking, too, except for their breasts.
