Weiberfastnacht and my birthday.
I’ll have something big to say soon. Meanwhile I’m preparing a class on history and film and watching “The Searchers.” Whether or not you’re cutting off someone’s tie today, I hope you have a good one.

Thanks! Today is a personal care worker day, so it’s automatically a little bit calmer.

Definitely partake of some cake! I was thinking about sushi, potentially.

So not only on FB but over here too:
Happy birthday to you, Serv 🙂
Astrologically we Aquarians have a pretty ‘full house’ at the moment (funny that you choose the picture with the cards of all possibilities) … I’m working hard on something new and exciting myself – I’m curious about your coming announcement 🙂

I hope your plans come to fruition!
Maybe this is one of those synchronicity moments — the reference I had in my mind was to a joke, as I’m 52 today: “Do you want to play 52 pickup?” (there are 52 cards in an American standard dec). 52 pickup isn’t a real game — if the answer is yes, the person who asks the questions tosses the cards in the air and then someone’s gotta pick up 52 cards. I hadn’t specifically thought about them as cards.

LOL my husband just said that’s ’32 heb auf’ in Germany – I’ve never heard of that either 😉 so it’s synchronicity on a whole different plane: my new plans involve cards and a sort of ‘free will astrology’ 😉 my mind right now is just filled with cards and seeing your picture in my current state really made me laugh out loud 🙂

I did not know there is a German equivalent! (I don’t think I ever played cards while in Germany — big omission, obviously). I hope it goes well.

I was trying to remember the other way that the cards would end up on the floor. There was another version… smoke, smoke, fire. Smoke for the black cards, and then “Fire!” at the first red card, at which point the prankster would fire the cards at you. Not so fond memories from childhood lol.

I vaguely remember that. The kind of trick a jerky older cousin would play on you at a family reunion or something.

Happy Birthday! Though I seldom comment, I always read your blog – and thank you for it. Since I retired from my teaching career in Wisconsin and moved to Colorado, I enjoy your Wisconsin-related posts. We also are sharing the journey of caregiving an elderly parent. I often commiserate with your posts in that arena. Again, I hope you have a good year and wish you some new adventures, responsive, creative students, and good health in your coming year. Happy Birthday!

Thank you! It’s not something I’d have watched on my own or for pleasure, but it’s relevant to this class I’m teaching and it’s consistently listed as one of the most influential films of all time — esp on people like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. I wouldn’t put it on my list of favorites but i have been learning a lot.

It’s interesting how much filmmakers “steal” from each other. I remember learning that George Lucas had seen Triump of the Will, and I thought, well, whatever, and then I saw the references to the scenes in his films — wow. Yeah, he sure did, and isn’t that a bit scary?
One thing that John Ford did in “The Searchers” was frame John Wayne in a doorway to emphasize his separation from civilization / society — and sure enough, that shows up in a Captain America film. Once you know it’s there, you see it everywhere.
