Don’t know how they do it in British universities. At the US universities I’ve been involved with, regalia was usually rented. It was available for purchase but most people did not do that.
I agree, the hat is fun! And very medieval / Renaissance.

In the U.K. you can buy it but it’s usually hired for the day.
