I wonder if Richard Armitage gets to approve ass tweets by Bryan Fuller? And if he does?

  9. It seems very much like Richard has undergone some sort of “Eureka” moment or “epiphany” since being in Toronto. A year ago he was tweeting about humility and talking about issues like being at one with one’s mortality. Today, hard as I try, all I hear and see when I read his tweets, is a little vanity and a somewhat desperate attempt to shove Hannibal down his fans throats (forgive the pun) even by going to the lengths of throwing very tempting bate in the form of mental teasers( Does he, doesn’t he bear all?), supported by pictures that leave little to the imagination. If he really never meant to embody in a role the “marriage” of violence and sex-appeal, as he has implied in previous interviews (not wanting to make violence “sexy”), then he is not only failing miserably, but he is actually contributing to this.

This is just my own personal take on things and of course I desperately want to give Richard the benefit of the doubt, because he is a wonderful person and a great actor, but whether I like it or not, he is lately coming across as a very different person from the one I had the pleasure and privilege of meeting, seeing and hearing live during ~The Crucible and the “Interview with Richard Armitage” at the Old Vic Theatre. Whether these changes are for the better or not remains to be seen. Indeed, what some may fear is a change for the worse is what makes Richard most happy and whole as a person, in which case we will have to learn to love and embrace this new side of him, but what seems obvious to me is that there is a new man emerging. I think someone wrote somewhere, perhaps as a comment on this blog, that Richard may have chosen to play a character like Dolarhyde as a way of exorcising his own demons. I am beginning to think whoever said that was onto something.

Either way, I wish him the very best. I want him to be happy and to be who he wants to be, whether that fits in with my idea of him or not. That, is my problem not his.

I will not elaborate on Fuller’s marketing tactics. They speak for themselves!

    • I think one might have a different view of Armitage’s career if one started with The Crucible. That’s really been a huge anomaly (a welcome one, but nonetheless). It’s the only high cultural role that he’s ever done since his career breakthrough (well, unless you count ShakespeaRE-told). So I don’t think he’s fallen that much in my estimation. However, the self-contradictions re: social media have been mind-boggling.

It reminds me of trying to drive on these dirt and gravel roads after a heavy rain; the red clay becomes slick as glass in spots, and if you are not very careful you can end up in the ditch. You have to hang on to that steering wheel, maintain your focus and not take it too fast. See what I am saying here, Rich?

        • hm maybe we are seeing more on the side of how far on the path he is willing to go for promotion of work which we didn’t see quite as much of before social media as there were only interviews to consider. And while heavy promotion might feel ok for things like Hobbit it feels different when it is a role like Dolarhyde although the intensity could be similar. He’s still selling in my opinion, pretty much the same as before, just a different thing.
Fuller’s tone has not changed i gather (fans of the show say, i have not looked back as far); he seems to have engaged in this kind of banter before. I have to say i fully expected it as he was going on about how handsome R is as soon as he got cast, it was obvious they were going to play that card, as they have done before, at least with Mads.
And i could argue about what the Crucible posters were actually selling, especially one of them :-p And he posed for them very consciously, so he was selling it too, he just didn’t have the outlet to talk about it that much. I certainly don’t feel selling his appeal is new 🙂 It just grates more for those of us who don’t really like the H thing.

It goes back for me somehow to the questions as to why he joined social media in the first place? Charities were one part of his personal motivation. How much he was advised to go for it for selling his work we’ll never know but the decision was his at the end of the day. If he wanted his reach to broaden, it is one certain way to do it. Then again he’s never said he wants to be a small actor in the UK or on stage, has he? (ironic tone here) He’s taken every conscious action within his reach to broaden his career and professional ambition, moved half way across the world and clearly strives to get a foot into the market in the US. Gotta get your hands dirty at some point to do that i think, it will not fall in his lap for nothing. He’s always wanted it and his actions speak loud and clear i think.

But I do think that things like repeated tweeting/deleting as well as some of his ill-informed and naive advice given in his blog post for Cybersmile, for a couple of examples, indicate he’s still got some distance to go before he has a firm handle on social media and how to best use it. He definitely wants success in the film industry here and being involved in social media is part of how you play the game.

            • i agree on that, he’ll hopefully have a steeper learning curve. I am just surprised that rather than think about it more and then take action (which seems his approach in acting at least) he seems to be diving rather head first in this.. He’s probably more impulsive than we thought 😉 He’ll need to learn to control that as he does his other stuff i think, it is a bit sad but he can’t afford to act like any other Joe Blogs on social media because he is not just a private person. I’m willing to give him leave way there for a while however 😉

I do not think he thought that advice through—or maybe he just has not seen as many true life crime shows as I have and the terrible things that have happened to some naïve youth. I know his intentions were good, but—again, as you said, he normally is more thoughtful and prepared, right?

I see where he is coming from and anonymity allows people to be more nasty and down right vicious, but it also protects the innocent and that protection is more important.
If i could recommend something to him it would be maybe to do one of those study books of his and draw scenarios for a fictional social media person and think up all possible scenarios and consequences and then identify reactions. But hey ho, sometimes one learns best the hard way 😉 He’s a big boy, he’ll figure it out.

  10. Frankly, I’m disgusted with Richard Armitage lately. I was such a huge fan, and always made the excuse to myself that he only played in garbage like “between the sheets” in his early years because he “had” to in order to stay employed. He said in one of his “Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” interviews that he didn’t want to do “tits and teeth” performances anymore. Unfortunately his true colors are beginning to come through much more clearly now. Personally, I’m very disappointed. There’s NO way around it. He’s fickle and doesn’t stick to what he says.
I mean, sure he can do whatever he wants and “change his mind”….but I had really been hoping he’d be a celebrity I could be proud to be a fan of. But now I see he’s just as disgusting as all the rest of them. No more fandom for me. I’m sticking to REAL people from now on.

Sorry if this offends anyone…just had to speak my mind.

      • Yah, this is where Richard’s “progressive thinking” has gotten him…to shaking his naked ass in front of a camera. Because…..well let’s just face it…that’s exactly what “progressive” reasoning leads to….to justify doing anything we want. All boundaries get “reasoned” away to the point where everything is justified. First discipline is done away with, then sexual order, until the dignity of human life itself is destroyed. Once everyone agrees with this “progressive” mindset, all values and decency are done away with….and then what’s to stop mankind from reverting back to the “cave-man” and barbarian days when people simply killed each other when they disagreed or didn’t like someone.
Sorry Richard Armitage; I simply CANNOT and WILL NOT support someone who obviously has NO strong or true values and whose priorities are as fickle as the wind. I can’t justify being a fan anymore, and I’m just plain heartbroken. He’s really let me down. I always had seen him as this stately Englishman who was really pretty decent for a “pagan.” But, not anymore. He’s no better than some airheaded male, gay-club stripper. His lack of morals has really hurt me deeply as a…well now…”has been” fan. I’ve said all I’m going to say now.

        Sorry everyone.

Tweeting a blurred picture of one’s ass on the Internet is not going to lead to murder in the streets. I just don’t follow that argument. Also, people do change. That said, I think stuff he does now contradicts things he said last week, and that is more troubling.

  11. I’ve never really liked the idea of him on Twitter but was willing to keep an open mind about it. For the most part I had to adopt a “grin and bear it” attitude to the self-contractions I’ve seen. For instance, he has always coyly demurred at being called a male totty and yet I can’t help but have the impression that when he tweets edited selfies, he’s saying, “Here I am, ladies, for your viewing pleasure!” *cue screams of adoring fans. He’s not very consistent with what he says in interviews and what he posts on Twitter. I agreed with what you had said about Twitter giving him better control of the content and perhaps the subtext of the message. And here he is…. posting pics of himself having his bum painted on.

  15. Contradictions – that’s mostly what I’ve gotten out of this past month or so.
Not only contradictions in terms of what RA has said previously (and frankly not so long ago), but also contradictions in terms of behaviour (and I’m not only referring to the photo of RA being “tatooed”).

The way I see it is that he’s letting more of his goofy-ness and his need to “nourish and nurture” come out – and I don’t really think he’s considered the implicatures of his actions at all. Now, personally I don’t mind. Perhaps RA is also on a mission of liberation?

However, it does certainly feed these analytical minds of ours. Why is he doing this or that? Why doesn’t he think twice before…?

RA’s an actor; he’s nurturing a career; he may not consider too much how certain actions, i.e. messages, photos, action impact others. At the same time, we know he has difficulty in saying “no, thank you”. Something most actors suffer from.

I agree with Servetus when you write that the only highly cultural role he’s had was The Crucible. I don’t consider North and South high culture (historic socio-realism with a whiff of romance), I don’t consider The Hobbit high culture (adventure), and I don’t consider Robin Hood, Spooks etc. high culture. Consequently, I don’t expect other high-quality, high-profiled roles right away. But it would be nice to see more of them 🙂

If I try to ignore (and believe me that’s difficult) the fact that I sincerely do not like the latest horror-addition to his roles – or the Hannibal show’s marketing attempts – my guess is this was an opportunity that opened up and was accepted, because it was intended to give RA another kind of exposure and an attempt to nurture an ascent towards becoming better profiled in the US. A move he has coveted for some time.

So, if I look at these contrasting vibes I’m getting, I would say we are getting to know RA better as a person and as a professional – for better or worse 🙂

    • I think we have to accept that Richard as many fans perceived him to be a few years ago isn’t quite the same fellow—he’s had a lot of additional life and work experience, he’s very ambitious, more confident and I think overall he actually worries less these days what people think of him and whether or not they always like his choices. Yes, I believe he just might be on that mission of liberation. But I’m not sure every fan is ready for him to leave the nest . . .

        • Alright, I’m guessing here, because I don’t really know the man; I’m just musing about what I perceive. I could be completely off the mark:-)

When I write ‘liberation’ I meant it in terms of liberating himself from a kind of ‘mold’ that RA himself has prepared for a number of years before The Hobbit, and which most fans, including myself, happily embraced. Seemingly, he was (and perhaps still is) this shy, quiet, thoughtful, bookish fella that was in stark contrast to many of his roles back then, i.e. Guy and Lucas.

With the international acclaim of his portrayal of Thorin has come a professional satisfaction and confidence that maybe he didn’t have before. So, he’s become more bold; more daring; and my guess is he wants to explore the possibilities that arise in a way that I’d imagine he couldn’t before. I also assume he’s financially more secure now.
That mold has become to ‘tight’, too restrictive, and I think what we’re seeing is his exploration of many things (which is a kind of liberation).

That said, there is of course the issue of the communication flaws that he so readily exhibits, but my guess is it’s a learning curve.
