Thanks Servetus’ – we will need all the luck! I wonder about RA too, I like to think of him as a staunch Labour man. Some of my friends are votingi Lib Dem for tactical reasons.

You survived WWII so hopefully you will survive this, too … but it’s nail-biting-ish and an inconclusive result would make things even worse than they have been, I fear.

I think he will vote thoughtfully and tactically. I haven’t lived in the UK for over 20 years and can no longer vote but I feel sick with worry about the result. I can only imagine how it feels for people living there.

If we weren’t busy with our own trainwreck right now, I’d be sick with worry too — as it is I am only queasy about England as I contemplate the impending collapse of liberal politics in the US.

I don’t recall him saying that in so many words and I searched his account this morning and didn’t find a tweet to that effect, although he could have deleted a tweet saying that. I think it was a likely choice for him, and he has followed several Lib Dem politicians iirc.

Lots of actors were remainers with respect to the EU because of work/colleagues and the Liberal Democrats were the only party who definitely would have cancelled any leave deal.

Right, but depending on where he voted, it might have made sense not to vote Lib Dem, as Lib Dem had no chance in many precincts. At least that is what i understood the tactical voting website to be saying.

Like you, I think this is a cataclysmic own goal, but who knows what will happen. I believe in the right of people to choose, and the people chose. Globalization isn’t going away. A friend of mind who’s a scholar of contemporary European politics thinks it will take about 25 years and the UK will be negotiating for re-entry.

I’m not sure what you mean. EU citizens will still be able to cross the English border with passports (how I’ve been doing it my whole life, incidentally). Frankly, I think movement of people will be the least of the UK’s problems. Goods will create the crisis.

Myself and other activists are devastated about the results and the stuff we came across while out canvassing just beggared belief.
Electoral misdemeanours are being uncovered including stopping students from voting in some areas, people taking other people’s votes and the postal votes going missing are just some of the shenanigans that have gone on.
Dog whistle racism, Brexit and the hatchet job done on a decent man, by a press controlled by Tory billionaires all contributed, as well as political in house backstabbing ,but what is particularly worrying is the green light for racists to come out and start saying we ( people like me) need to get out as “they have got their country back”.
With the GoldenFart your end, Toad of Toadhall Farage and Bojo the clown here, we have our very own unholy trinity.
And the warnings went unheeded as now Bojo et al, who is now totally unfettered, has already started the attacks on the most vulnerable.
A friend of mine has already decided to leave England, other people I have heard are also doing the same.
We are in dark times. Prayers.
On a positive note people are determined not to let the vulnerable down and are rallying round.

When I watched the news from the UK Parliament after the vote, I wondered how people people felt, reading about the Enabling Acts in Germany in 1933. What have we unleashed (collectively)? And you’re right, US politics is scarcely any better.
