Richard Armitage, take me away

U.S. readers may remember this ad from the late 1970s / early 1980s:

I have really severe water fear, much worse than Mr. Armitage’s, so it would never occur to me to relax myself by sitting in a bubble bath.

But I found myself thinking today, “Richard Armitage, take me away,” when:

–the guy who did the oil change and rotation of tires on my car accidentally cut the line from the washer fluid to the jets, necessitating a last-minute repair

–it turned out that all our library books were three days late, necessitating payment of fines

–the bottom fell out of the paper sack of groceries (note to self: remember to bring cloth bags next time)

–my father insisted on helping me make lunch, adding thirty percent more chaos and mess to the event

–my father and my nieces got into a fight over what tv program to watch in the afternoon

–pacified by the opportunity to paint, the nieces spilled paint all over the floor to the point of necessitating mopping

–my mother got home, took one look at the chaos in the house, shook her head at me, and retreated into her bedroom until the nieces left

–I cut myself on a knife while washing dishes after dinner

–I wondered when they would all go to bed so I could just think for ten seconds

Oh, I love you all, frustrating family members and I am sure that I drive you as crazy as you drive me. It’s just at such moments, though, that I think, “I want a man with legs like a tree trunk to drive up, whisk everything into order, then put me in the front seat of his car and take me to some undisclosed location for some undisclosed activity.”

When do you say, “Mr. Armitage, take me away?” And whom do you choose to rescue you? Mr. Thornton in his carriage? Porter in his jeep? Guy on his horse? Lucas in his convertible? John Standring in his Land Rover?

  1. Oh, wow, Servetus. Your day sounds like a few I have had. And yes, I do remember those Calgon commercials. As I mentioned offblog, I used to be terrified of water and wouldn’t put more than my lower legs into the pool when we were on vacation. When I took a bath, it was in two inches of water. Over the years (and after one swimming class) I finally got over it. I think a bubble bath with Mr. A might get you over your phobia, my dear. As long as the water wasn’t too deep for either one of you. 😉

I love your diagrammed photo, too. 😀 He does look extremely capable of sweeping you off your feet and taking you away from your cares and worries.

As to when I need the aid of Mr. A, well, after a long, hectic, tiring, hot day at the office trying to do the work of two reporters — I could sure use him.
Guy–Guy riding in on that big black horse with the hip action thing going, stretching out his hand and rumbling, “Come with me, Lady Writer.”

I am sure he could think of a way to make me forget all my trouble and get happy.

Of course, Porter and his Jeep would be pretty nice, too. He’s definitely got that bedside manner mojo. Hmmm . . . and then there’s lovely Dr. Track . . . oh, heck, can I be greedy and have all of them? 😉

  2. I haven’t had such chaotic days yet, I certainly had days when all I wanted is to be somewhere else I’ve invoked Guy, with no much luck I have to add, I guess travelling on horse from Angie’s home is too long a journey 😉

    OML 🙂

  3. I LOVE the way you think Servetus!! My life certainly isn’t as hectic as it once was but I have to admit that I am a trifle anxious as later this week I have to go house- and dog-sitting. Some of my family are in Scotland for three weeks and I agreed to go live in their house for the last week they are away so the dog (a big yellow labrador) doesn’t have to be so long in the kennels. They have never left him for this long before, poor baby! I know it must sound silly and it’s not as though either of them are unfamiliar as I used to live there, but I love where I live now and have become quite unused to living alone!! 😦 I will have the dog for company I know and friends who live only a short distance away but Mr. A would be more than welcome!! 🙂 He could walk the dog, “protect” me at night and I’d be more than happy to have those wonderful broad shoulders to lean on while I gazed at those powerful legs stretched out in front of him (and me, of course) as we watched TV, read or listened to music among other things!! I’d be very content if he were just himself and we drove around in the Beemer (or more properly “Bimmer”!!) and he can take me wherever he wants! 😉 I have THE most crazy images running around in my head now!! Mr. A can most certainly come and take me away any time he wants. 😀

I am sad to hear about your fear of water though. You can certainly commiserate with Mr. A. I can’t imagine what it must be like but I do know of at least one other young guy who is likewise afflicted. It blows my mind that Richard is willing to go through what is nothing short of torture for him (in more ways than one) for various roles he has played. I’m guessing the water-boarding and being underwater in CA must have been the worst. Even though I’m pretty comfortable both in and under water I could not have handled being in that submarine with many feet of water above me. You’ve got to hand it to him! He really does suffer for his art at times!

  6. Ah Chaos my friend….
I am currently experiencing one of those times in life that when I am at work I am thinking about what I need to be doing at home to get ready for my move…and when I am supposed to be packing/sorting for the move, all I can do is think about the projects I am dealing with at work. I need to be in two places at one time!

Harry Kennedy – please move into the place next door to my new apartment. I like LaCarre & red wine too! 😉 (oh and wear your glasses)

Wishing moments of solitude and happy RA thoughts!

  7. What a day, servetus!! Love Guy, but wouldn’t invoke his presence for comfort. All his plans go haywire and Marian runs rings around him. 😀 Lucas, or JP. Or handyman RA himself.

So, the contractor fixing my car port apres the freak April windstorm finished? yesterday (2 mths later), after blowing all the fuses using heavy stuff in the outside outlet. He didn’t reset the breakers correctly, and discovered later – no hot water!! Just one problem this summer….among a few others.

No fear of water. Fear of heights, so one phobic relates to another phobic. 😀

  8. I had to LOL reading your post. You described a day in a life for me, just add working from home and writing to the mix. Elderly parents and children do have a lot in common, don’t they?

I love the drawings over the pic. Very funny. Yes, he does have a stong sturdy shoulder for a girl to cry on. Thornton is the go to guy on a bad day. I like Porter but can’t watch repeatdly bec of the violence and hight octane activity.

  9. I would run with any of them, Luke, Guy or John Porter. But today I’m thinking of the future, I would like to go to an unknown place, in contact with nature, where no one spoke Portuguese. I’d like to see the mountains, feeling its cold. I wish I had a destiny and a mission, and not just uncertainty. So today Thorin would be my choice.

  13. *grin* I actually DO HAVE Calgon in my bathroom in the US. I think it’s some sort of water softener… and does make everything very, very soothing… Sorry to hear about the rough day! I also love your diagram, professor.

  14. A glimpse into the world of domesticity….! Should I say enjoy it, embrace it? LOL
Love your diagram of his anatomy. Also love leisure swimming in the pool but makes sure my feet could touch the bottom. On the beach, I only stay in shallow waters up to my waist….Always cautious with water in open seas.

There was an incident a few yrs ago (if I may)…We dropped anchor in the middle of a bay fishing happily…every 5 minutes I’ve got a catch, then suddenly, the boat became very rocky from side to side and saw the rope holding our anchor floating on top of the water. We lost the anchor and automatically, I told my late husband, we’re going home right now! He was laughing at my frantic reaction but steered the boat as soon as possible to go back to shore! I bet he saw how distressed I was then. Thanks

  15. Oh, what a crazy day you had *hugs* I read your post and I think I see my day when my nephews come to us. They are like two small tornadoes 😉
I understand your fear of water, I’m afraid of water, too (all by the fact that in childhood, when we were on the lake my brother nearly drowned he was rescued but since then I have a fear of water).

But answering your question, hmm I always say that Mr. Thornton is the man of my dreams … but now I have a vacation and I think I really need a solid shoulder, upper arm.

  16. Just noticed the contrast between how much more full his brief case is here (17th September) than when outside the Radio 1 studios on 4th of May the same year! I wonder what he had in it on this occasion? CA scripts perhaps seeing it was confirmed in the same month that he had been cast in the movie? 🙂

I like how you highlighted his various body parts on the picture, Servetus and commented on them. Spot on! They sure are worth taking note of. 😉 Hope you don’t have a repeat performance of that very crazy day!! 🙂
